  • Lawsuit against Tunney -Count transcripts

Tedious reading but some interesting insights. Sworn testimony regarding Wills. Note the discussion surrounding Richards reluctance to make a mixed race bout due to the aftermath of Johnson Jeffries which he was blamed.

    - - I passed on this because google books just don't load right on my computer.

Maybe a forum wiz kid can put it straight up on the forum.

I am technology challenged so I am sure it is me.

Is this the lawsuit by Bobo Hoffman (sp) out of Philadelphia? It took place in 1931 or '32.

It had to do with Billy Gibson browering money from the Phily mob in 1926 with A. Rothstein's approval and Gibons signing Tunney's name, giving away 20% of Tunney's future purses to Hoffman.

The case was thrown out of court becuse Gibson was committed to a sanatorium in LA with dementia, so he could not testify.

Suddenly once the case is thrown out he is released from the sanatorium and lives to the mid 1940s. He is also added to Rothstein's final will revisions, which was written on Rothstein's deathbed. So something was very crooked about Billy Gibson.

Anyway the really interesting story takes place in 1927 when Dempsey's people try to refuse Dave Barry as referee. Two days after Dempsey's refusal of the *** Barry as ref Hoffman levies his lawsuit against Tunney claiming he didn't receive his money from the 1926 fight. A judge is about to issue an injunction stopping the Chicago fight (Long Count) when Dempsey relents and then Hoffman pulls back his law suit and the rest is history, long count history.

Rothstein dies in 1929 and Hoffman then again in 1931 (I think) tries to sue Tunney for 20% of the Heeny defense. But as I said Gibbson is hidden away and the suit is dropped.

Anyway, is that the court opinion I can't read or is it something else?
      - - Even Tunney was fraught with scurrilous era legal problems. Them crooks sound sorta like the Wilt and Butterbean deniers we currently have soiling themselves on this forum.

I posted this originally and from what I could make out it is FULL of very interesting info regarding a multitude of boxing topics during the 20’s. Unfortunately it’s been quite a while since I attempted to walk through it. It’s primarily concerning that lawsuit I believe but brings along with it additional info including Wills.
