The quality of boxing technique and training methods has advanced a lot during the last 100 years, however, if there's a fighter that had a modern way of training and understanding of boxing, it was Dempsey. His boxing book shows that he had a great understanding of leverage and rhythm to dictate the match, I bet he could ko Deontay Wilder since Wilder is the one who's closer to Dempsey's weight and the one with worst technique. Fury and Joshua wreck Dempsey tho.

The punching mechanics in Dempsey's book have all but been forgotten in this day and age.

That is not a sign of advancement. It's a sign of regression.

Lol. 180lb guys dont even compete as heavys these days. Dempsey didnt even fight or beat the best men or his era let alone anyone elses. Meaning wills and greb who had beaten many of the guys dempsey fought. He beat a fat willard, lt heavys like brennan, carp and gibbons, a crude firpo then got beat twice by tunney.

Wills went like 60 fights without losing (apart from one dq) over an 8 year period while dempsey struggled past lt heavys who greb had beaten.

Wills was dog shyte. It's proven by film. He'd have rolled over easier than Wills, Firpo and Sharkey.

          Dempsey had DESTROYED Brennan previously.

And Gibbons was one of the finest of all time. Easily better than anyone Wills ever beat.

I would definitely pick Kovalev and Betterbiev at their best to stop Wills. His size advantage would be meaningless.

Yeah, but TRY that in the modern ring. See where it gets you.

Jolts, shovel hooks and shoulder whirls can break bones today just like they could back then.

Yup. So now fighters wear 12oz. Gloves (even bigger and differently padded in the mandatory and ever- extended amateur ranks); the stance has changed (weight distribution, high guard); punches have changed (strighter, EVERYONE jabs); footwork has developed; scoring has changed; body shots are all but illegal.

                This is common knowledge.

In MMA a lot of what Jack did works. But you have to be careful about being countered with kicks and knees.

Are there any heavy body punchers in the HW division right now? Who's got it?

Yes and Greb beat brennan and gibbons but both got a shot and he didn't. Wills and greb the two best of their er a and dempsey fought neither. A totally protected fighter who in his 8 year reign only beat guys that were no match for him or guys hed already beaten (miske, brennan).

Dempsey was an exciting fighter but fought nobody threatening pretty much ever, avoided all the top black fighters and didn't even fight greb, let alone wills.

He's a classic example of legend over reality.

                      He demolished Willard and Firpo.
He soundly beat Gibbons and Sharkey.

                      THAT is reality.

Wills wasn't as good as any of those men, regardless of the strength of his claim and his long tenure among that division's elite.

Greb was better than Gibbons (barely), but a Middleweight. And we can't be certain his style was as well-suited as Gibbons' for going the distance. Gibbons was fighting to survive, afterall. That's one thing we know Greb did NOT do.

I very much DO wish he fought those men. Wills deserved at least one shot at the title. And Greb's EASILY the greatest to ever lace up gloves.

But the two fighters whom I really think should've fought Dempsey are Tommy Loughran and Jess Willard in a rematch. Loughran was LHw Champion, and apparently handled Jack even better than Gene dud, albeit in sparring. And I really do believe Willard was a far, far better fighter than the man who only half showed up in Toledo.
