  • Why thank Trump he did nothing!

I wonder why Mike Tyson and Michael Spinks were willing to stoop so low as to say "Thank Mr. Trump"

He had nothing to do with the fight.

In this promotional ad (below) Trump's name is said three times and shown once. The fighters names once each.

Ad will play at beginning of the video.

Tyson, 50, returns to Atlantic City this weekend as part of the Atlantic City Boxing Hall of Fame's inaugural class. Trump didn't make the cut. The president's legacy in Atlantic City is mixed, but fans, fighters, promoters, and historians said that, for a brief time, Trump made boxing great again.

"Listen, he paid me $11 million to fight that night," Tyson said recently by telephone. "He was putting on the biggest events in boxing. Atlantic City wasn't the way it is now. It was a booming city then." Trump got into boxing when the sport was blessed with heavyweights in their prime — such as Tyson and Evander Holyfield — and also a few — such as George Foreman — who hit their prime twice.

Donald Trump was very good for boxing in New Jersey," said Larry Hazzard, New Jersey's longtime boxing commissioner. "You can't rewrite the history." The foundation for Atlantic City's boxing legacy was laid in 1976, when New Jersey voters passed a referendum to legalize ******** in the struggling resort town. A year prior, according to BoxRec.com, there was one boxing promotion in the entire city.

Resorts, the first casino, opened in 1978 and began hosting matches soon after. The first, on Aug. 18, 1979, featuring Philly brawler Matthew Saad Muhammad, a light heavyweight who is also an inductee into the city's first Hall of Fame class.

... Long the sport of hustles, boxing found a perfect partnership with the casino industry. Promoters said financial backing from a casino was one of the few ways to lock up heavyweight mega-fights in the seaside venue. Trump, a member of New Jersey's Boxing Hall of Fame, also had the moxie to outbid Las Vegas. He entered the casino game in 1984, when he opened the Trump Plaza Casino and Hotel next to Boardwalk Hall. The casino hosted its first fight in 1985, a year when Atlantic City was home to 142 boxing promotions.

In 1987, Trump Plaza hosted six of the seven world title fights in Atlantic City and landed the heavyweight match between Spinks and Gerry Cooney at Boardwalk Hall.

And you think the HW Champions of the world needed to 'thank' him?

We are talking about a guy who figured out how to lose money with a casino, in New Jersey no less.

We are talking about a guy who once gave tickets to Bobby Czyz and insisted he sell his own tickets to the fight because Trump wouldn't put up the guarantee.

"Made Boxing great again." -- Once again we are asked to believe something wasn't great until Trump arrived.

He bought his way into the Boxing the same way he has bought every thing in his life. Do you feel the same way about Steve Wynn? I suppose we should then conclude he made boxing great again, several times.

The HW Champions of the World should never have been made to say that. It was insulting to prize fighters everywhere.

Would you be as happy if they said Thank Mr. King, or would that have stuck in your craw?

He did nothing for Boxing, maybe New Jersey gained from his presence, but that's New Jersey not Boxing!

P.S. Larry Hazard was a sycophant. The Boxing rags dubbed him the worst Commissioner New Jersey ever had.

You said he did nothing for them or boxing. They claimed different. I will take their word for it. He certainly didn’t hurt the sport, so I’m not sure why you are going in so hard against him, unless this is just some political overspill that you are ranting your disapproval over.

No, no, no that wasn't a legit answer -- he did nothing for boxing -- New Jersey is not boxing. But just like all Trumpers you didn't give an answer you just played the victim

I know there is no way I can get anyone to believe me in this political atmosphere but I have been embittered by that fight promo since I first saw it back in '89.

But doesn't it bother you that a promoter would have the fighters say thank you to him? -- We all should be thanking the fighters, all of us, not them thanking us, or especially someone who is making money off them.

Tyson himself said he got $11M from Trump. He brought boxing back to Atlantic City, lots of memorable fights took place there. I never heard of any fighters complaining about Trump when he was getting fights made.

You should be more outraged at people like Don King to took money from Tyson and screwed him over. Where is the thread of outrage about Don King and all the fighters he milked?

Couldn't agree more about Don King -- in regards to fighters complaining about Trump, try Bobbie Czyz.

But that promotional ad sticks in my craw, does the man's narcissism know no bounds? I can't get pass it, the HW Champion should be thanking no one!
