The Best Referee Ever?

I have to admit... Aside from Mills Lane and maybe Steve Smoger, I only notice the ref when he is doing a bad job.

Mills Lane had the talent to somehow involve himself in the fight, command a presence without interfering in the fight. I found this remarkable.

Steve Smoger had the ability to just not be there. You could focus on the fight and and not worry about Smoger changing the tone, or characteristics of the fight.

I found both of these men to be excellent for the reasons above.

Mills weren't even trying either. He was just breaking up a clinch with Allen in the corner when Popkins took flight!

Mills was straight out of the old time refs...small and bald with just a touch of hairline...strong as an ox despite the size.

For real though, only just started paying attention in the last few years and that's only to present refs. When fair but firm retired I started paying more attention.
