For your information, Davey fought Armstrong for his Wel. Title. In came in at 136 lbs. protecting Hank's Lightweight
Crown. Both combatant's were lightweights. Armstrong was fortunate when the referee looked at Henry's bloody face and said "You can rest now" of 2:48 of the twelve rd. via tko. Mr. Day's was signed to fight the #1 welterweight contender Pedro Montanez, to decide Armstrong's next opponent for the Title. Mr. Day destroyed Montanez, referee stopped the slaughter in the eighth rd as his eye was nearly ripped from his head. Davey finished the fight unmarked, except his arm was crimson red. The NY. papers and the UP, said, Montanez was leading and hurting Day, with heavy blows to his mid-section. This is how, they promote a large gate for Montanez next fight. Mike Jacobs, signed Montanez the loser, to fight Hank for the Title. The Illinois Boxing commission would not recognize this match as a Title fight. The NY Boxing Comission split the Lightweight Title with the N.B.A. as Amber's lost his Title for not fighting Mr. Day. The NY Commission , Mike Jacobs, Managers and Trainers all slept in the same bed. Mike Jacobs immediately signed up Lew Jenkins to fight Amber's for their version of the Title. Caplan, was Jenkins manager and pal's with Uncle Mike, keeping their Champion's, with them.
The N.B.A. signed Sammy Angott to be matched with Mr.
Day for the Lightweight Title. Jake Dempsey was hired by Angott's own manager Charlie Jones to be the sole referee and judge. Dempsey's fee was estimated to $7,000 to sdo a hatchet job on Mr. Day, making Angott the Champion by one point.

Mr. Day, nine month's later on 2/3/41 was still a headliner, when beat Billy Marquart. The Newpaper's were calling out Fritzie Zivic next opponent to be Davey
Day, this was turned down. Mr. Day had to wait eight more before, he was matched , with Bob Cat Montgomery, the end.

I’ve heard he’s underrated. It’s just too bad when sum expected him to box Mike and drag him into deep water he actually got destroyed in what just over a minute? He said he wasn’t afraid of Mikes power in the pre fight interview. Doesn’t help. Prolly underrated most his life but in his biggest fight couldn’t have been blown out much worse. Retired after also.

Right he fought a LW for the WW title. Like I said he never campaigned as a WW. We all know that Hank controlled both titles it was his call to decide which title he wanted to defend. It didn't make Day a WW contender.

If he really wanted a shot at WW he should have campaigned at WW, but he didn't. And as you point out he still in the end went after Montgomery another LW. Sounds like your boy wanted a free ride to a WW title shot he never even tried to earn.

Of course the newspapers did that, every manager worth a damn bought ink for his fighter. Please don't think that finding a newspaper championing a particular match-up actually means anything.

Well that’s the thing. My dad said Spinks was a great LH, but also beat Holmes at HW who was very underrated. Said Spinks was a good boxer and hoped he’d give Mike a challenge by way of dragging it into later rounds. He didn’t say Spinks would win, but he thought it’d be Mikes biggest challenge. I know he watched it closed circuit somewhere. When I asked him what happened? He said he was frustrated when they asked Spinks if he was scared of Mikes power in the dressing room and he said “No”. Who honestly knows if that’s here nor there. But he told me the fight lasted barely a minute. I was a huge Mike fan, had the game, rented his greatest hits. But my dad is a legit unbiased boxing fan. I knew if Tyson smashed everyone it wouldn’t be great for the sport. I asked him if he thought “there’s anyone out there that could beat Mike Tyson?” His eyes kinda opened up and he said “Well son there’s this guy named Evander Holyfield...” But same thing I was nervous about Evander being in a lighter division etc. There’s a lot in between. But when they finally fought he bet on Evander to win and would only take even odds against anyone cause he didn’t want to ruin their night. But I mean the whole story is why we watch right? Getting it wrong keeps us entertained, just like getting it right does.

              Again, check your facts.

Spinks lost something like 30 or 40 pounds for the Qawi fight.

He swlled up to (a lean) 210 pounds at one point.

He basically heralded in the modern era of bulk up and boil down.

In any previous era he would've been a career Heavyweight.

Of course he had 'business' to be in the ring with Tyson. He held the lineal HW Championship of the world. What was he suppose to do, listen to armchair generals announce he wasn't worthy of his title and therefore give up the payday?

Is there anyone else's title you wish to deny with a forum post?

Of course that man had 'business' in that ring! 20 million dollars worth of business and he deserved every nickel of it, he was the HW Champion of the World. A title he gained in the ring!

When I said he had no business I meant from a perspective of winning. I'm a fan of Spinks but when it was announced I never thought he had a realistic chance. Mike was too quick, hit too hard and much stronger than Michael. I would have been happy if he beat Tyson but it didn't turn out that way.

He's not in a previous era. He got in there with a wrecking machine who was a naturally bigger man. That's my take on it at least.

Yet Spinks was strong enough to twice defeat Holmes who was a natural HW and a larger and harder punching Cooney. Spinks himself was almost 6'3". Tyson was only 6 pounds heavier than Spinks when they met.
