    Douglas - Tyson ref

I’m sure you all know about the long count for Douglas and quick count for Tyson. Something I never see discussed, though, is how the ref repeatedly let Douglas hit Tyson on the break. In the ninth round, Tyson was chasing a knockout after dropping Douglas the round before. Midway through the round, the ref allows Buster to throw a combination on the break that staggers Mike. The champ backs into the ropes and whatever comeback he had brewing was then beat out of him. The momentum had now swung back towards Buster because of an illegal punch he was allowed to deliver.

You’ll see several attempted hits on the break. Wait for the ****. The beginning of round 9 is at 30:45

Was this ref dirty, caught up in the moment, or what? It’s some of the worst officiating I’ve ever seen at the championship level.

    - -42-1 odds = bad officiating

Follow the $. The way it was, is, and forever shall be.

The bad guys were the two Japanese judges, who somehow witnessed a close fight.

I don't see it! I see Tyson (at the 30:09 mark) throw a punch on the break and then I see a moment later Douglas throw a half-heated "on the break" punch that does not land; he gets warned for it ... when Douglas then opens up on Tyson a few seconds later (which is beginning of the end for Tyson) there is no break called.

        I just don't see it.

I agree regarding the ref's count -- it seems the ref decided that Douglas was going to get up so he seems to adjust his count to Buster's rise.

But in regards to a quick count for Tyson, I think it is irrelevant -- all he did was save Tyson from a further beating. You could say he stopped the fight rather than counted him out.

You watching the same video? At the 30:09 mark in the video I posted the round has ended and they are just sitting down on their stools.

Watch round 9 of the video I posted. The comeback is halted midway through the round by a hit on the break (32:45 to be exact)

Not sure what is so confusing here. I figured I was crystal clear.

Now that you are exact I see it at 32:45 (there is no "crystal clear" time in your OP) - Douglas does hit him as they are breaking.

I will argue that Tyson's comeback was finished way back in the opening of the round (9) when Douglas lets loose on him around 30:20. After that opening exchange Tyson does not throw another combination. Only lunges with one punch and then looks to tie Douglas up. That was when Tyson's comeback was finished.

When Douglas does jump him at 32:45 (and I agree Douglas does jump him coming off a break) Tyson is walking away from the clinches lazily, showing very little fight left in him. It must have been too temping for Douglas not to jump him.

Tyson usually fought dirty but he cowered when opponents fought dirty against him. He has every stereotypical bully behavior down.

In the time leading up to the fight, Douglas faced a number of setbacks,
including the death of his mother, Lula Pearl, 23 days before the fight.
Additionally, the mother of his son was facing a severe kidney ailment,
and he had contracted the flu on the day before the fight.
