I really believe that if the Cruiserweight division had been instated when he debuted, he would have made for one of the finest champions of his era.

These posts needed to be framed.
First of all thank you Rusty. Your point about the cruiserweight division is a good one. We have fighters like Moore, Burley who were so technically oriented, and then we have guys like Gatti and Quarry who were all about the will power and persistence to keep throwing punches.

You don't think Quarry also had skill, though?

Being comparatively soft-handed and prone to cuts, he tended to fight recklessly against bigger men. But his ability to counter punches, and fight on the move was fairly sophisticated for a man of that size at that time.

I have always wondered how he would have faired against guys like Dempsey, Sharkey, Godoy, Walcott, Johanson, and Marciano. I think we would look at him a lot differently if we could have seen him against guys his own size, who were less sound conventionally speaking, but still bigger punchers.

Not saying he'd be Wilfredo Benitez of the undersized Heavyweights, but even more certainly not a Gatti-type.

Lol. Your right on my wavelength. I was actually thinking of doing a thread on the relative differences of Gatti versus Quarry. I was going to raise this very issue. I think Quarry was a lot more evolved of a fighter. He fought better comp and had more things he could do, better power, etc. Gatti had a great chin along with Quarry.

Quarry would have probably stood out more and indeed distinguished himself more in an a different era. marciano was a bleeder and managed... marciano versus Quarry hum?
