If that were true many fights would have blinded fighters.
I don't see why Ali would fabricate years later that meeting with the mafioso and we have validation that the guy was in Sonny's corner.
I recall reading that Machen [I believe it was] also said that he was doing OK until he had his vision affected while fighting Liston.

You don't hear or see that happening in other fights.
