Absolutely bizzare ending.. Liston was competitive losing but still in the fight.

This is the original and only broadcast of the fight. It’s been available on YouTube for many years.

The truth is Louis had a different temperment, differences of opinion, and may have been competitive the way any athlete would be, but there was in fact a deep respect between these two. Louis was helping Ali prepare at this point in his career.

Ali was tragically misunderstood in his early days. he was cast in the role of Jack Johnson who had his own ways. Ali was making an effort to understand the human condition. Like Malcolm X he went through a period where he felt separation of the races was the answer.

BUT and this is a big BUT... When Ali protested the war it was for the simplest of reasons: He did not want to kill people who had not wronged him personally. Louis and others naturally felt this was unpatriotic and people made it out to be cowardly... But years later when the dust cleared and Vets from Vietnam were being spit on in the streets, people realized the war was a tragic event for many...including those vets who did the right thing and were mistreated horribly. Ali suddenly didn't look like such a coward for sticking to his guns.

Point is, you can have disagreements and not hate each other...Louis was patriotic and didn't appreciate Ali's brashness but was otherwise a mentor to Ali in many respects.

I watched the video clip. That clip doesn't really say much one way or the other.

But one thing I have noticed when I watched old Ali footage/fights is that Joe would always pick against him.

And Joe would get really really mad whenever Ali won.

Whenever Ali did win it seemed Joe had something mean to say
while he angrily smoked a cigarette.

Good post. Lots of info there for me to look into.
I never knew he helped Ali for a fight.
I knew he helped Alis Enemies though.

And I've only ever seen him get mad at Ali winning.

We’re all children of our own generation. Louis was. Ali was. And I am WAS now. I don’t feel comfortable with today’s ‘modern times’.

The ****y youngsters of today ain’t yet aware of what’s in front of them. But in 20-30 years from now, they will suffer the same fate when time has had values changing.
That’s how it always has been.
