  • Big George vs Larry Holmes

--- Mods, at least two fights between the two were proposed during their delayed comeback but never came to fruition because George could make his money fighting anyone where as Larded Lar wanted parity that nobody would pay for.

If need be, remove to Fantasy, but thus far members have voted to have historical fantasy fights like this.

Anyway, George part of the Golden Four era and the same age as Lar. That giant sucking sound we heard was Lar's ascension as soon as Ali, Joe, and George retired leaving only the soon to be retiring Kenny who nonetheless whooped the pants off Lar to no credit.

After George started making all that money and notoriety in his comeback, Lar got jealous and made his own to much less success. The last fight was proposed when both were in their 2nd retirements that got canned. Pissed Lar so much that he spent his first 20 minutes of HOF induction speech ranting about George, the clearest example of a massive inferiority complex ever seen in a fighter.

I figure this a battle of jabs with George closing distance whenever he wants to unload. Lar couldn't stand up for any length of time before riding the ropes to hide how weak his legs were, so it's inevitable he gets KOed, although after George knocked down fighters a couple of times, often he backed off in his comeback for not wanting to hurt them and Lar being such a geezer by then, that's possible

Not to mention that it's "Queensberry" rules, not "Queensbury", for Chrissake.

--- Couple of Pink panty responses absent any logical timeline analysis.

        Sadly typical these days.

Look, when no one gives a shìt about one of my technical proposals, I usually revert to YouPòrn and the likes. You'll love it, believe me.

If Holmes can survive Foreman's first 6 rounds then he can take a decision.

--- I can appreciate the sentiment, but that sound closer to prime to prime, understanding that George never really had a prime, what, 27 and retiring disenchanted over getting screwed around by Ali and King and the media portrayal as a lower order brute of creation?

Agree with your assessment regarding Foreman (II) vs. Holmes (II). -- Foreman by KO before eight (and probably an ugly one too, with Holmes going down very hard); but I believe a prime Holmes (I) could have weathered Foreman (I) early; he was at least as good as Jimmy Young and that fight exposed Foreman's inability to deal with quick feet and hands. Holmes (I) had the legs under him to stay away from (and frustrate) Foreman (I) for 15 rounds. IMO what Jimmy Young could do, Homes (I) could do.

Do not agree with the section in bold. - Norton was Holmes best night, he became a champion caliber fighter that night (and I am not a Holmes fan; I agree with everything Don King complained about: the guy was bad box-office.)

Is this not a prime to prime match up?

Never had a prime? George certainly had a physical prime. Between his pro debut and his first retirement he was completely prime.
