99 Bottles of Beer & Years~Jack Dempsey Savages Jess Willard

July 4th, 1919 Jack Dempsey obliterates Jess Willard in the most brutally destruction in the history of MQ rules.

Made boxing a spectacle beyond compare to usher in the modern age.

Joe Louis in his 4th of July debut knocked a solid fringe contender into the lap of the commish post haste.

No more great 4th treats in the Nancy era of today's Americans. Shame that sad to say...

Actually it has nothing to do with being a "Nancy" or any other unnecessary insult to America.

Tex Rickard decided after the Willard fight that he no longer would promote on the holiday itself but on the days around it. He recognized he could draw better if he didn't interfere with the family day. This he is quoted on; he learned it best to avoid the holiday and for the most part future promoters followed his lead.

Once we could watch from our homes, then holiday sporting events returned.

      Some examples from Rickard:

Micky Walker - Harry Greb July 2nd
      Dempsey - Carpentier July 2nd
Harry Wills - Paulino Uzcudun July 13th
Jess Willard - Luis Firpo July 12th

Were as The Dempsey-Gibbons fight in Shelby was on July 4th and it tanked; it was not a Rickard fight.

Tommy Gibbons - Jack Dempsey July 4th

--- Shelby fight in the middle of nowhere tanked for that reason, a cash grab by Kearns that was way short on the purse money.

Louis debut 2 decades later and plenty of 4 th battles later. I could look up the last big one on boxrec, but if it happens in the modern era of broadcasting where all the money resides, it's a 3 day 4th weekend.

November means still she is 99 years old, it will take 4 months to step into 100th year..
