Yeah bud, it was a crazy time.

Personally for me the craziest was the inter-gender matches. Woman vs Man being an unfair match up was equalized by burying the man waist deep.

Most commonly used for domestic violence disputes at a time when trial by combat, ordeal, so on, was around but was also used to match prizefighters from time to time as well.

Oh, I forgot to mention, the man is unarmed. The lady is allowed various blunt weapons, cudgel, sack with rocks, a decent stick, stuff like that.

Imagine the drunkard who beats his wife type being buried half way and walloped with a sack-a-rocks for his crime

You can see that happening as vigilante justice; let the old lady take a few cracks at the bastard. Hard to believe it was ever codified, even as 'sport.' But hell, who knows.

              1. Ted 'Kid' Lewis vs. Jack Britton

              2. Tony Zale vs. Rocky Marciano

You should all take a look at these fights. They don't get any tougher!

You're probably thinking about Ad Wolgast.

Sport would be a strong term. Entertainment I think is more correct.

I'll dig around and see if I can't find what book I pulled that **** from. Pretty sure it's pre-figg stuff. Pretty sure it's Talhoffer's but I'll have to look to be sure.
