  • What was your first fight?

Being the old sentimentalist I thought a good thread would be what was the first fight you ever went to?
For me it was Frank Bruno vs Tim Witherspoon at Wembley stadium back in July 1986. It involved a long overnight bus journey (350 miles), wandering around London all day until the fight started, late if I remember to accommodate the US viewers. The fight itself was an anti climatic blur and I had to walk from Wembley back into central London afterwards!
But at least I can say I was there! Of course I didn't learn my lesson as I went and saw Bruno again this time against Joe Bugner!
Maybe Bugner might remind you of someone in the heavyweights at the moment? Give you a guess he likes to fight Albanian cruiser-weights!

Not sure if it was the first but the first I remember was heavyweight Jimmy Young vs Tony Fulilangi.

The first fight I remember hearing about was Ali vs Frazier 1.The first fight I remember watching on TV was Muhammad Ali vs Ken Norton 1.
The first and only fight I have attended in person was Thomas Hearns vs Dennis Andries in Detroit for the WBC Light heavyweight title in 1987.The Detroit crowd was pretty fired up and joyous when Tommy won. Hearns was still the biggest icon in Detroit at the time and the crowd adored him.

The first fight I saw live in person was Andrew Maynard vs Bobby Czyz Atlantic City 1990, Czyz was supposed to be the stepping stone fight for Maynard and the Former Olympic Gold Medalist got Knocked out. It was a excellent fight to see in person.
        And that’s that

          30/11/56, Moore versus Patterson.

There was a Spider Webb bout that may have been previous to this, but I cannot remember the opponent. It may have been Randy Sandy.

P.S. I did not see these live but on TV.

The bout began my interest in boxing was Ali Frazier 1 in 1971. Listened to it on local radio.

I was lucky to grow up during the 70's where most all major bouts were shown live on regular network tv. FREE! To understand and as an example ALL of Alis title fights during his second reign were shown live on network TV aside from Frazier 3 and Norton 3. Great legendary bouts such as Norton-Holmes and all of Salvador Sanchez title bouts again were free to watch on regular TV. What an a****ng time.

My first live boxing show was up in North NJ at the now defunct Playboy Club hotel. A fellow that graduated high school with me was making his pro debut. He fought a nobody who fell down with the first few punches.

Went to many PPV fights at the ICE world arena in Totowa NJ. Now long gone. Watched Ali-Holmes, Holmes-Cooney, Duran-Leonard 1 there among many others.

Went to Yankee stadium to watch Ali-Norton 3 live. Not a great fight but in person a grueling give and take boxing exhibit. Really hard to determine after most rounds who had won them.

Sadd vs Grant (live) - got to sit on the apron and hold the ropes for the ring card girls; knew a guy on the commission.

Clay vs Liston II (recast TV, age 10) thought, "this is boxing"?

Patterson vs Liston II (radio or possibly radio updates, age 8) I remember my mother was heart broken Patterson lost again; She expected Patterson to come-back and win again like before. I was clueless as to the details as to what just had happened, only remember Mom and how it was somehow important.)

Have not seen any in person, but believe the first fight I ever watched was Mike McCallum vs. Donald Curry. What a KO.

--- 3 yrs old moved into a new neighborhood.

My new friend was the same, so we ended up in his backyard sandbox playing with his army figures. He got mad and picked up a 3' length of 1•2 and took a swing.

I jumped up to intercept the bludgeon, grabbing the stick from his hands to throw it a 6' Chainlink fence into the bayou below.

He burst into tears and ran for his mammy. As I passed by his large well endowed Mammy cussed me out goodi knew then that life was gonna be a little rough, but I came out pretty much unscathed thanks to good instincts.

                    Saw many others tragically succumb...R.I.P...
