IMO Rocky retired when he saw Liston on the horizon. I think Liston would have KO'd Rocky inside 6 rounds.

Also the "Old" man was 27-0 as a heavyweight coming in!
Moore was the reigning Light Heavy Champ at that time too!
He earned his shot beating Valdez (2), Whitehurst.

People make Moore sound like he was through or coming out of retirement he went on to fight for 8 more years!
He went 39-3 in that time.

Archie Moore is an ATG and was an outstanding human being.

This x100.....Moore was a top HW contender winning fights, he wasn't some washed up fighter coinjured up to make Rocky look good

Liston was still at best a regional level fighter in 1955. I don't think he was a major player in any division....it would be more likely that Marciano retired to avoid Patterson (not saying he did). Liston lost to Marty Marshall in 1954. I don't think Liston became a major player until 1958.

Watch out if it goes past six or seven. Rocky's chances increase dramatically.
All I can say is Liston early to mid rounds, Rocky late.

Liston was in jail when Marciano retired. At the time of Marciano's last fight Liston was still fighting guys that were 9-3, 5-2, 20-8, 13-9, and lost to Marshall who was 17-6. Even the version of Liston that was champion Marciano was ready to get in the ring and spar hard with.

Marciano probably didn't even know who Liston was when he retired.

Liston had nothing to do with Marciano retiring.

Liston was in jail? Rocky must have looked over the horizon.

--- Thanks Ray for busting up all these myths about Rocky and his opponents.

Liston is also mythological in both good and bad ways, and the inartful try to get away with matching the worst version against the best instead of both in full pomp.

Always seen it as a 50/50 fight that favors liston early and rock late for obvious reasons.
