  • Emmanuel Stewart Highlights

These still crack me up. How he is just badgering Wlad about punching "you're not punchin enough, you gotta let your punches go, keep punchin, you gotta punch more."

And to Lewis against Tyson "GET THIS MUTHA****A OUTTA HERE!!"

He did this with Lewis and Jermaine Taylor memorably, too. He was a pisser, I miss him. Anyone else enjoy watching Emmanuel nag and yell at his fighters? Seems like it would be more annoying and irritating than motivating, but it seemed to work.

Do you think if he had lived longer, Wlad would still have been champion when he retired?

Good subject. I have thought frequently about how much I miss his voice as an analyst and his presence in corners. Steward had more champions on Wednesday than Cus D'Amato had in his entire longer career.

Manny knew how to treat people. He was not a crusty curmudgeon as full of himself as a mattress packed with money. Trainer, strategist, friend, disciplinarian--like Cus, he was the entire package.

If Steward did not exactly invent the concept of fighting tall, he certainly put his stamp on it as its major philosopher, advocate and developer. He also took one of the top boxing towns in America and made it tops without peer for a decade or two. Add to these merits that he was the best expert commentator in the business, and folks should start to get the idea that he is too often left out of the conversation when boxing greatness is discussed. The guy himself did not box, but everything else about boxing he was a bonafide expert on. He had more footholds on boxing's shores than a centipede.

Yes, he also had him an erstwhile peccadillo for white powder ma, but he recovered from that.

He converted a behemoth with no natural fighting instinct into a longtime heavyweight champion with his philosophical tutoring. It really is hard to speak enough positives about ol' Manny.

Manny was one of a kind a great man. His fighters had crazy respect for him. He was also a very good amature boxer.

But he was also money hungry. I remember when he agreed to train Yuri Foreman and then Cotto offered him more so he jumped ship.

Couldn't you just picture him getting on Wlad to pick up the pace against Tyson Fury? Wlad probably wins that fight with Steward in his corner.

I think Wlad just had nothing that night. He seemed to be out of it. Even when he went after Fury in the last two rounds it didnt matter.
