Looking back two or three more punches by JCC in those last two seconds may have been enough to permanently injure Taylor. One of the most controversial stoppages ever but I wouldn't want to be Steele that night. If he lets it go and Taylor ends up like Benny Paret, he is scorned by the boxing media and fans. It was a lose-lose for Steele that night.

I wouldn't want to be Steele anytime. He couldn't make a good decision under heat, and he didn't make one here, either.

One only needs to observe how Taylor is today to realise how close he was to becoming another statistic

It's more Taylor and the corner's fault. The corner for distracting Taylor but more Taylor for not responding to the ref when Steele asks if he's alright. If you don't respond and look away, the ref really has no choice but to stop it.
I remember someone on here making a good point though about Chavez not going to a neutral corner and if Steele insisted on that, Chavez wouldn't have been close enough to throw another punch, with about 5 seconds left when it was waved off and 2 seconds when the clock was stopped. That and the little time left usually has me leaning towards not stopping it, but again, Steele had no choice if the fighter doesn't respond to him.
Steele, ironically, was the same ref in Chavez' first fight with Frankie Randall and Steele taking away two points for low blows gave Randall a 1 point win in his favor, but probably shouldn't have been that close. At least the right guy got the decision though. Great, classic fight though. I remember coming home from a movie on a Saturday night and the last round still being on when I got home. So I then rewound the tape to watch the whole fight.
