  • 3/31/1980 Televised Card- Incredible

Anyone else remember the incredible night of boxing on 3/31/1980 that was televised on ABC TV ?
There were 4 world title fights from 3 locations that aired. In all my years of fandom this was the greatest televised card I have ever seen. I addition to the televised fights at these 3 locations, there was 1 untelevised world title fight between Marvin Camel and Mate Parlov for the vacant WBC crusierweight title.Other untelevised fights were Thomas Hearns vs Santiago Valdez and Alexis Arguello vs Gerald Hayes .
I remember staying up until around midnight watching these fights. Years later I found someone who recorded this ABC broadcast and have this on DVD.

The Televised world title fights were:

    Landover Maryland:
*Sugar Ray Leonard vs Davey Boy Green for the WBC Welterweight title

    Knoxville TN:
*Marvin Johnson vs Eddie Mustafa Muhammad for Johnsons WBA Light Heavyweight title

*John Tate vs Mike Weaver for Tates WBA heavyweight title

    Las Vegas Nevada:
*Larry Holmes vs Leroy Jones for Holmes WBC Heavyweight title

Untelevised notable undercard fights from Las Vegas:

Marvin Camel vs Mate Parlov for vacant WBC Cruiserweight title
    Thomas Hearns vs Santiago Valdez
    Alexis Arguello vs Gerald Hayes

Nope, but sounds pretty good. Speaking of great cards, what about the Night of Gold one on ABC, which featured the 1984 Olympic gold medalists. I believe Pernell Whitaker, Meldrick Taylor and Mark Breland were on there.

Reminds me of the old Don King PPVs when he would stack the entire cards. There would be at least 5 good fights on one PPV.

Be nice if someone did that now. Maybe someone can do that with the women if they continue to win medals in the summer Olympics, like Claressa Shields and Marlen Esparza.

Yes I remember that card. Great night of fights. BTW, it was from that night that the Ring named Larry Holmes the heavyweight champ.

It was? I guess because Ali was retired by then and it wasn't known that he would come back to fight Holmes yet. I thought it was when Holmes beat the shot Ali to become lineal champ, but makes sense if it was thought that Ali was retired for good.

Some had considered Holmes the lineal after Ali but the Ring recognized Holmes after this. Jones and Holmes both previously beat Weaver but more importantly Holmes beat Weaver in a heavyweight title bout.

Makes sense, since Ali was gone for a long time and thought to be retired by then.

Yep. 2 brutal left hook stoppages.
The best punch Leonard ever threw IMO and almost the same for Weaver too. Only the shot he KO'd Carl The Truth Williams with years later was better IMO.
I thought Leonard killed Davey Boy Green. As for Tate, I believe he was still down when they cut away to the Holmes/ Jones fight.
