We never saw how far Sanchez would have gone, but in fairness, VL looks the goods in today's market, and getting better every time he steps up... Have enjoyed his career thus far, and much looking forward to rest of it...

Good to see you're still a part timer btw
Left for three years and only came back this past Spring. Hardly post at all in the History Section: It's just dead and what little there is hasn't grabbed my interest.

I'm always happy to see Mickey here. Lately a lot of veterans are coming back for a variety of reasons.

I actually prefer the history section to be slower. Other sections are so busy that you post about something and an hour later you can't find the thread or your thread gets buried.

I like the Gomez fight the best. Gomez was a monster, then Sanchez dropped him, and things went down hill real fast.

Patrick Ford was awkward, and was a different puzzle. Nelson did well considering he took the fight on short notice, then went on to greatness after getting stopped by Sanchez in the 15th..

Well Loma isnt your standard novice. Consider also that Holmes struggled mightily against Carl Williams who had nowhere near the professional record of Loma at this point and certainly not the AM accolades.

Of course Loma isn't a seasoned pro, but he certainly passes an eye test.

Also, let's not forget that, in his final fight, Sanchez himself had a bit of a struggle with 13-fight novice Azuma Nelson - who at the time was completely untested at world class level.

As I've said earlier, both are great fighters... and I certainly don't think it's a given, that Sanchez would simply destroy him!

Yes, indeed Ford was a challenging style. I think that was Sal's closest fight. I really liked the Castillo fight. Castillo was very fast and skilled and took a lead but Sanchez kept his composure and won the fight in the last 5 rounds. Cowdell was tricky for him too. Sanchez seemed to have problems with guys with speed and movement but would eat guys alive that came at him.

My two 70 plus year old uncles with old film and video tapes and hundreds of ring magazines still tell me Patrick Form won... Once they pass, God forbid, all their boxing stuff comes to me..

I'm going to watch it tonight. Once a year I watch my Sanchez career set and I'm up to that fight. I personally think Sanchez won it by a round or two. He was behind most of the way, but turned up the aggression and intensity and won the majority of the rounds down the stretch to eek out a close one. I think he became a better fighter after this close call. Cowdell, like I said gave him some issues but was never as close as SD indicates.

One time I was talking to Nacho Beristain at a Marquez workout and we were discussing great Mexican fighters and I brought Sanchez up and he didn't seem to share the same enthusiasm much to my surprise. He said he had horrible technique, won fights because he was stronger than opponents and was only going to decline from that point on. He was more impressed with the techniques of Marquez, Olivares, Zarate, Saldivar, Roman, Chavez, Lopez. I tried to see how he could have such an opinion but it's hard because Sanchez was so great and did so many excellent things all at once. Nacho almost seemed to have disgust for Sal.
