  • Stanley Ketchel

This is a guy who i know very little about and i need some schooling on who he beat and why he is so highly ranked all time.

He regularly enters MW (one of the deepest divisions in boxing) top ten lists, sometimes right up near the top.

I can see the two wins over the great Philadelphia Jack O'Brian near the end of O'Briens career, three wins and a loss with Billy Papke, and a close loss to Sam Langford which im not sure about whether it was at MW.

Obviously he also has a big KD over JAck Johnson before being Ko'd which says more than a little about his power.

Other than that his opponents dont have great looking records, which i know isnt the best indicator and is probably a symptom of poor record keeping of the time. But it makes it tough to gauge who were contenders of the era and who werent.

So is Ketchel really worthy of being a top 10 or even sometimes top 5 MW?

Or is it a bit of rose tinted glasses and myth that has him ranked so high?

Who are his best wins at MW?

Please school me on this legendary Middleweight champ

All that all time great stuff is sci fi fantasy bs so I got nothing to add there, but Ketchell beat the best guys of his day which is all anyone can do + he was so young (killed at 24) he likely woulda only gotten better + added to his accomplishments so he probably does get some of that Salvador Sanchez extra lil bump in silly rankings since they did so much so young & never got humbled & humanized as much as most boxers do who box for a decade or two longer then Ketchell did.

Randomly as a GR cat coming up I used to visit his grave every now & again. He's buried real close to where they hold the West Michigan + Michigan Golden Gloves. Used to go pay my respects during GG season once a year usually. RIP Michigan Assassin.

Many times people who would not laugh in his face, taunt Roger Mayweather... Yet from this tooth lacking mouth often comes the wisdom of the ages! Lol. One thing Mayweather is is a chauvanist: Not a male chauvanist, a "Michigan" chauvnist. He will tell anyone who will listen that the geat fighters from Pittsburgh, New York, etc all take second place to that midwestern cauldron...NO! not Chicago!! But Michigan. Detroit...once called our Paris, had the unique violent underpinnings, toughness and smarts, that when we start talking about fighters from that area, we get quite an assortment indeed!

Ketchel was the archetype! Tough as nails, taking on all commers, etc. There are specific accolades for the man but at the end of the day? he was a guy who competed in one of the most outstanding divisions in boxing, even being a pest to Johnson before johnson became his friendly neighborhood dentist and extracted a good deal of his teeth.

Sanchez is over rated. He lost to Pat ford and barely beat a green Nelson.

        Ketchel was better

For real, is not like he beat 5 future hall of famers before turning 24...wait, he did that.

I love reading about Ketchel, he is my favorite old timer but there's not much footage of him, he was quite a character and was brutal in and out of the ring.
Tough as nails just like every atg of the past.

                  Who were the 5?

                  Genuinely asking.

I only know Philadelphia Jack O'Brien and Billy Papke.

Really hard to tell by Brec who were good opponents and who werent due to the poor record keeping

edit: Nevermind you were talking about Sanchez
