Absolutely. It could have been done some other way.The real story was a man overcoming all odds to win the heavyweight title. It's a shame that those who aren't familiar with Max Bear think of him as some kind of monster. I wonder if Max JR ever considered filing a lawsuit against Howard ? Would that even stand up in a court of law ? Ron Howard should be ashamed of himself.

I think Ron Howard copied the Max Baer from The Harder They Fall. In that film Baer himself actually portrays a mean spirited version of himself during the Primo Carnera fight and the events surrounding it.

Still, I agree. Ron Howard should have been taken to task for his portrayal of Max in regards to the death of Campbell because of the profound impact it actually had on his life. But I do remember Jr saying he thought his father would have still enjoyed the film because he hated the boxing business and had truly wanted to be an actor.

Yeah I remember reading comments in the news at the time from Max Jr. when the movie first came out. Wouldn't be surprised if he considered a lawsuit. I remember reading that Joey Giardello successfully sued the makers of The Hurricane for how bogus his fight with Carter was portrayed, making it look like Carter was railroaded by the judges when the fight wasn't even close.
