I'd say mayweather but whitaker was better overall because his offense was so much better.

For pure defense, Nicolino Locce was superior to both.

Locche never beat an elite fighter in their prime.

If you are going to search Whitaker's record for a victory over an elite fighter, you may have to lower your standards of what that is. You may have to count fighters of the ilk of Haugen, unless you want to count the empty shells of a couple of fighters just because they had big names. A man's name does not change. He may have still fought a better caliber than Locche, however. The fact that Pea fought a couple of Hall of Famers tooth and nail, does not hurt his case. Going on memory alone, he should have won the Chavez fight. Chavez also got another gift against the surgeon.

Against The Surgeon? You mean in the second fight, with that technical split decision, yeah I guess. Even the first fight was almost a gift, as Randall only won a split decision because he was ahead by one point on two scorecards, but only after Richard Steele, the ref also in Chavez/Taylor 1, took two points away from Chavez for low blows. I guess Steele giveth and then he taketh away. I remember Randall being pretty dominant in that fight though, so it shouldn't have even been that close. Can anyone confirm that though?

I cannot remember, lad. I don't feel like watching those fights right now.

The one I have to watch over is Carter/Giardello. I watched it about a month ago and got a big surprise. If I can find a better copy I want to watch it a final time and make sure. How one's own opinions can change on matters, even clearly observable matters. I do not claim to underdstand it.

That's arguable. Castillo, Corrales, Hatton, and Canelo are some names that immediately come to mind.

The definition of elite carries different inflections for everyone. Nothing wrong with Castillo, Corrales, Hatton and Canelo. He knocked Chico out when Chico was considered a monster. Castillo was still in good shape, too. Hatton was at his peak. Only Canelo was a little green.
