I literally don't read anything referring to that as the philly shell.

I've researched the term a bit myself and the most I could find on its origins are that it might be attributed to George Benton who was from Philadelphia and used the technique extensively. Or that it came from the Fight Night video games.

In any case the technique predates Benton for sure. And many fighters with no connection to Philly used it, such as James Toney and the Mayweathers from Michigan or Ezzard Charles from Cincinnati.

Anyway, good piece on how Chavez went about attacking that defense. He had a deadly and active left hook.

Enjoyed that mate cheers. Big weapon when facing that 'philly shell' defense is the righthand to the body imo. Shell users tend to dip to their right when they see someone angling to throw the right hand so they can catch the punch on their shoulder and counter. This can become predictable and it opens up the body to a right hand.

Use the jab to blind them and make them think a right to the head is coming behind it, wait for them to react and then dip the right hand down low into their side

SRL used this brilliantly vs Floyd Snr in their fight. If i remember ill gif it when i get to my laptop and post here

You couldn't miss James Toney with a right hand/hook to the body.
