That and used his size advantage as much as humanly possible. He's nothing compared to Pep who is one of the greatest boxers ever.

Saddler was a great body puncher and a relentless pressure fighte with power, he could fight inside. He fought small for such a tall featherweight. Crucially he had quick enough feet that Pep couldn't get away from the inside and when he tried Saddler held him.

People forget how good Saddler was, half the people here say he wasn't half the fighter Pep was but he beat much bigger guys. Joe Brown, Jimmy Carter, Paddy Demarco all went on to be future lightweight champions. He beat ATG Flash Elorde. He probably wasn't as good as Pep all in all but he was a great fighter.

Saddler and Archie Moore both ended up training George Foreman

Saddler wasn't the first man to rough up and defeat Willie Pep. Angott did the same to him and that occurred before Willie Pep had his plane crash.

Pep was only 20 years old when he fought Angott, Angott was 28 and had just moved down in weight after being beaten by SRR. Angott was much bigger than both Saddler and Pep in terms of weight (not particularly height) and regained the Lightweight title a few fights after beating Pep.

There an interesting story with the fight, Pep-Angott was meant to be 15 rounds but Angott had broken his hand against Spoldi in his last fight so rescheduled it to 10. Pep swept the late rounds but lost a decision and the consensus generally was Pep would've won the fight if it were the full distance because Angott hadn't trained as much as he would've liked because of his hand.

Pep won the NYSAC featherweight title less than 3 months after the Angott defeat. Angott won the 9th and the 10th round. Angott was the bigger man but he wasn't much bigger than Saddler.

He was certainly bigger built as Saddler was a very skinny guy, i'm not sure about strength wise though. I do wonder if Saddler could have put quite a bit more weight on if he built more muscle. Anyway my original point about the Angott fight was that the Saddler fights were not the first time that Pep's swiftness couldn't get away from a mauling fighter and that his failure against Angott came before the supposed reduction in speed after the crash. Angott was not the only lightweight Pep fought durng the 40s, he defeated the others.

As is the case for many slick defensive boxers.
