  • Muhammad Ali info needed

    Hey guys,

I know it has only been a short time since the legend has passed R.I.P i always looked up to him, he was my idol a man of speed and pure power dodging most that where throw at him and just plowing his way through man after man. Reading about him in the newspapers being 20 years of age and winning the Heavyweight title from Trevor Berbick. Then when he wouldn't go to war in vietnam to be honest i don't blame him and everything he said the reasons why he refused was nothing less than the pure truth! Anyway i want to collect as much Memorabilia as possible i have been looking around on Muhammad Ali memorabilia classified ads sites, for sale sites and don't seem to be coming up with a great deal... i mean there are a few things posters, championship ring etc but i am looking for like a biography of some sort???

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks

Good luck. Ali lost to Berbick in his last career fight. Tyson won part of the heavyweight title from Berbick.

Read Thomas Hausers biography of the great man.

There was another book I read, I can't remember what it was called but it was a collection of articles and interviews with and on Ali from the 60s right up until the 90s or possibly 00s.

I used to have access to old copies of SI & there are a lot of cool old Ali articles in those. There are two good bio's of him. The Hauser one mentioned & another one from the 70's of which the name escapes me.

As already mentioned Thomas Hauser's authorised biography 'Muhammad Ali: His Life and Times' is an excellent book (it won the William Hill sports book of the year award). It's comprised of interviews with over 200 people who had some part to play in Ali's life.

David Remnick's 'King of the World: Muhammad Ali and the Rise of an American Hero' is another must read. It's one of the more complete books on Ali.

Mike Marqusee's 'Redemption Song: Muhammad Ali and the Spirit of the Sixties' is another must read. It posits Ali in a social and political context.

Mark Kram's 'Ghosts of Manila: The Fateful Blood Feud Between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier' is another I'd advice you to have a gander at. It's a good counter balance to the Ali as demigod narrative. It's not afraid to show the man at his worst, which was much needed to restore some balance.

'The Fight' by Norman Mailer is a worthy and entertaining read on Ali's 1974 bout with George Foreman.

'The Tao of Muhammad Ali: The Man, The Legend' by Davis Miller is a moving portrait by someone who idolised and was inspired by the man, and is worth a look. It's an enjoyable book.

If there's one book that gives the most accurate picture of Ali I'd say its the anthology of collected writings edited by professor Gerald Early titled 'The Muhammad Ali Reader'. It's possibly the best of the lot for me but I'd advice reading the first four that I mentioned first. That way what you bring to this one will make you appreciate it more.

I've also got one called 'Muhammad Ali:Through The Eyes of the World'. Its a collection of interviews in the vein of Hauser's book. I think it might be an accompaniment to a DVD. I've never read it though so I can't say whether its any good or not.
