  • Hagler vs Duran - Was it a razor-thin decision?

Hagler vs Duran.. Great fight from 1983. The fight unfolded with Hagler dominant over the first half of the fight, with Duran coming on strong over the second half of the fight. Hagler rallied in the final round to edge out a razor-thin decision and regain his 160lbs crown. Many on the forum claim the fight to be a landslide win for Hagler. Claiming it could never be a "Razor-Thin" decision.. How did you see the fight?

It was competitive but not razor thin...

15 rounds it was probably 9-6 or 10-5 hagler... Maybe 8-7 if you give all the close rounds to duran..

Duran gets a lot of credit because he outperformed expectations, similar to morales-Maidana, morales gets credit because he was competitive when everyone thought he wouldn't make it past a few Rds.. But he still clearly lost

What's the difference between winning by less than 2 rds and razor thin..

I would think they are about the same.

I agree Duran was competitive and did better than expected but Hagler won 8 rounds so however you cut up the others he won. To be over generous you couldn't give Duran more than 5 rounds and a share of 2.
Hagler would've won over 12 rounds as well so I don't agree he needed the last 3 rounds

I think I had it 9/6 for Marvin if it would of been scheduled for twelve and the fight went the same way it would have been quite the uproar. It was a chessmatch with some action not the greatest but certainly entertaining.

I just rewatched the fight because I haven't watched it in a year or 2. I scored it 14/1 Hagler. I'll explain why.

              1. Hagler controlled the pace throughout and kept Duran right where he wanted him.
              2. Hagler dominated the inside even better than his work on the outside.
              3. His jab kept Duran off balance quite often.
              4. The only time Hagler faltered was the 11th or 12th round where he slowed a bit but he bounced right back the next round.
              5. Had Hagler stayed on the inside he would have surely knocked Duran out just review the last 2 rounds.

Those are what I can think of right now after just finishing it.

I'd say it was competitive but not really close. Duran was fighting way above his best weight against one of the top 5 middleweights of all time. He exceeded expectations by surviving, but certainly didn't impose his will on Hagler.

Hagler should have whipped Duran, but for whatever reason simply didn't go for the kill.

I agree with points 2 , 3 and 5 to a degree but your scoring is extremely out .After being involved in the first Vito A fight and not winning the title I think Hagler would not have carried Duran. I do not agree with the official scoring at all but duran won at least 5 rounds. There was sizable swelling on marvins face from durans right hand which he kept throwing despite injuring it. Duran had as much to due with the fights pace as hagler. I think Marvin was at his peak physically for that fight but was somewhat concerned with the Duran Mystic .

Yes, he definitely was concerned about Durans power, thats why he kept him at a distance with that wonderful jab of his. Most if not all but the last round were close. If you look at the last round, Duran beats on his chest wanting Hagler to come at him with everything, Hagler did exactly that but Duran didn't want none of it. Hagler completely dominated him in that round and I am confident that he started to fight more on the inside once he felt out Durans power.
