Did Tyson get a fair assessment on his overall talent

I pasted a reasonable quote from a you tuber I saw...

When CARL WILLIAMS gave LARRY HOLMES a tough 15 Round fight, CARL WILLIAMS was called "A Tough Fighter" !!!!!!.......... When CARL WILLIAMS got Knocked Out By MIKE TYSON,, CARL WILLIAMS was called a "BUM" !!!!!!!.................................When TREVOR BERBCICK gave LARRY HOLMES a tough rugged 15 Round Fight, BERBICK was called "A Tough Fighter" !!!!!!!!,,, When TREVOR BERBICK got Destroyed by MIKE TYSON,, BERBICK was called a "BUM" !!!!!!!!!!..................... When BONE CRUSHER gave LARRY HOLMES a pretty Tough Fight,, BONE CRUSHER was called "A Tough Fighter" !!!!!!!!!!!, When TYSON beat BONECRUSHER easy,,, BONECRUSHER was considered a "BUM" !!!!!!....... When MARVIS FRAZIER got KO'd by LARRY HOLMES in 1 rd,, people said "HOLMES LOOKED GREAT" !!!!!!!!,,,,,, When MARVIS FRAZIER got destroyed by MIKE TYSON,,, people said "Tyson Beat A Bum" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!................ ... When MICHAEL SPINKS beat LARRY HOLMES twice ,, people said "Michael Spinks Is A Pretty Tough Fighter With A Lot Of Heart" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..,, When MICHAEL SPINKS got Destroyed By MIKE TYSON in 1 rd,, People said - "MICHAEL SPINKS was just a Blown Up Light Heavyweight" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ................................................ ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,& that's just the UNFAIR CRITICISM gave to MIKE TYSON through the Years,, because in reality,, TYSON didn't beat "BUMS" !!!!,,, His Superior POWER, SPEED & BOXING SKILLS just made them look like "BUMS" !!!!!!!!!!!!!

My take is Tyson was at times too good at times, and when the slightest foot off the pedal was released..."Tillis" " Tucker" he was back down to average?

Numerous champs had WAY more difficulties with average like fighters, you can name ANY HW and you will see there is either one or multiple ones, but they go unnoticed and brushed off. In Tysons case they use the FEW fights that went th distance in his prime as evidence he was not so good. Keep in also Holmes hurt his hand in round 3 and was also on meds for a pinch nerve against Spinks yet lost a close decision, one I thin he won. The Tucker fight ,ALLEDGEDLY he hurt/fractured his hand. Now as being in and around boxing myself I know with the wraps extra tape and padded gloves a hurt hand does not really effect a how hard you will throw a punch unless you are a power puncher, Tucker was not and MANY fighters fight with hurt hands its part of the game.point being he defeated Tucker fairly easy along with the rest.Tucker also went the distance with Lewis WAy after his prime which would hurt him more than a sore hand. Tubbs went the distance with Bowe and won some rounds as well,Bruno himself almost put Lewis down before round 7. the only REAL strike on Tyson is he fought a slightly rusty Holmes but also crushed him and was the only one ever to k.o him....holmes also beat Mercer and went the distance with Holyfield at 43 in LESS shape than he looked in 1988. Oh and he also schooled Tillis a year later, toying with him in a exhibition bout,i posted that vid.

So does Tyson get a bad rap for being to dominant against pretty stiff competition?

Based on how good he was easily the most underrated boxer of all-time. Personal life destroyed Mike before any opponent could even challenge him. Last one to unify belts against champions.

I don't ever hear anybody calling those guys bums. Williams, Berbick, Bonecrusher, Frazier, and Spinks were all very good to great heavyweights in their time. If Tyson wasn't around Bonecrusher would have been a good champion. Spinks(who IMO over achieved in the heavyweight division) was a very good tactician and good champion at heavyweight, Berbick was a good champion and Frazier was a very tough contender type during those days. So IMO people who have called those guys bums after Tyson beat them didn't really follow boxing back then and weren't familiar with those guys. Those guys are legit and good wins under Tyson's belt.

I don't think so honestly. Most people regard Mike Tyson as an ATG. The latter part of his career is what drags him down. If he had kept straight outside of boxing he may be regarded as one of the greatest HW of all time.

I think its natural for pushback to neutralize extreme opinions....and this is regardless of whether an opinion is false or true.

With Mike lets remember that people were declaring him invincible, the most dominant heavyweight force. So naturally when he shows any weakness then he becomes an overrated bum. Horrible as that sounds thats the way the media conditions people to think and express supposed logical opinions.

I still remember trainers talking it up when Douglas was succesful against Tyson....saying things like how the right kind of opponent was just what was needed, etc.

One thing is for sure... when Tyson was dominating he was dominant in a way that showed how good he was. he didn't need excess size, or a lot of rounds to create opportunities and he capitolized right away.
