to put things in perspective to fight 360 times is like taking a year of your life and fighting every day.

He looks thick and strong as hell. All without the miracles of modern sports science or strength and conditioning coaches, imagine that?

Doesn't surprise me at all. I read in an old newspaper upon Battling Nelsons retirement, that he had about 1,000 fights. Only a fraction is shown on boxrec. Of course in Battling Nelsons case it might include exhibitions which may also be the case here with the popular slapsie. Still I find it very plausible that a ton of old fights are missing from boxrec.

Management and promotion did not have exclusive control over many fighters from that era. The fighters themselves promoted many of their own engagements. Prior to Dempsey's rising in the ranks he fought for years on side shows and "toughman" challenges. Who knows how many times they fought non contracted bouts.
Maxie doesn't get his true due because of his "slapsie" character seen after his boxing days were gone along with his fear of hurting someone badly.
This guy was good and he proved himself time and again against the best
of his era and they fought him to prove themselves.

Participating 298 known pro bouts and being stopped TWICE is unbelievable.
The names on his record are top guys from 165 to 185 and the repeat opponents are very interesting matches.
Very tough man and his reputation as a nice man too superceeds him.

              Well said.

You know Ray...the proof is in the pudding. Its funny that guys like Max, Lamotta, etc fought so much and we are often told that they got hit a lot...Well I think they knew how to move in such a way that hits were nullified, other wise they would have been a real mess! Defense is subtle, the range a punch needs to be effective decreases dramatically as one inches out of range...Ted Lewis the kid was another artful dodger when it came to punches... This skill shows by virtue that these guys were able to fight so regularly, among other ways.
