I agree with your answer to the question, but disagree with the statement in red. They cannot be equal everywhere. Even Robinson did not look as good against Gavilan, whre his instinct told him to just box. But I agree that great fighters nearly always show a high degree of adaptability. Ali was not equally great against Norton's style compared to most of his performances, but was one of the adaptive fgihters ever in a ring. Every fighter has weaknesses, or at least a weak link in their armor somewhere. I believe boxer-puncher is the superior style in boxing, but it is also my belief that most fighters hate to come up against an energetic swarmer with a good jaw. They would much rather have someone they can pick apart from the outside.

I said he did not look as good. Gavilan had the style to make Ray settle down and outbox him. Both Gavilan fights were a bit dull compared to Robby's usual performances. Yes, one sees some peerless boxing. But a dancing match was like shackles to Robinson. Gavilan was a spoiler. Though Robinson won close decisions, they were not all out wars.

I would like to know more about Marty Servo. What do you know about his style?

Like Joseph said, Hearns was beating the crap out of Duran. You may want to rewatch that. And I was referring to Barkley's fight with Hearns, not Duran.

The knockdowns in round 1 of Duran Hearns were basically flash knockdowns.. If you watch again you'll notice Roberto slipping all over the canvas even before Tommy landed any potent shots and the commentators announcing that.. It was the third knockdown in the 2nd which really hurt him..

Those were not flash knockdowns. Duran's legs were unsteady after getting dropped from a hard right hand and he was clearly hurt. He was also cut over the eye in that round. The second was from a body punch that appeared to lift him off his feet. For me flash knockdowns result in little to no damage. There was visible damage done to Duran in round one.

I'm just not seeing what you saw in this fight.

There were. Duran barely trained for that fight. You can probably find out about that on Google. But Duran was thoroughly beaten and I'm baffled why that wouldn't be obvious to anyone who watched that match.

I recall reading in Hands of Stone that duran collapsed in the shower after a workout before the hearns fight in one of his poor preparation weight reduction sessions. This bout was all hearns but only a insider would have really predicted the result as In the bouts previous Thomas was having issues with his right hand which I believe was broken in the Benitez victory and Duran had just gone the distance with Hagler. Most people tried to beat duran with movement but the Kronk teams game plan was to go right after Duran with confidence that Thomas right was finally healed. Duran was beaten from the start. It goes down as the most one sided fight the Fab 4 had. Hearns has said the punch he hit cuevas was with was the hardest he every threw but the ones he hit duran with in my view where near that quality.
