I always thought it funny that the MQB Rules are quite specific that a ring be 24 by 24 feet.

I wonder if arguments over the size of bare knuckle pitches was the motivation to standardize the size.

They say that very early bare knuckle fights would have a pitch created by a rope held by spectators, and swell and ebb with the crowd's excitement.
Interesting word usage. And maybe true, for the red above. But there is a tendency to standardize everything in sports anyway. I would say that might be a pretty good reason though!

      16 x 16 = 256 square feet

      20 x 20 = 400 square feet.

      22 x 22 = 484 square feet

      25 x 25 = 625 square feet

Maybe you do. What's the apron size on one of those 24 footers?

Large then 25 x 25 square feet. I am only intersted in the space of the ring they can box in. I'd guess an extra 4 square feet in a 25 x 25 ring

I am sure you meant 2 feet of width on the apron.

OK so who can do the math? I can't.

I am going with the MQB Rules.

            24 X 24 ring with a two foot apron.

What the square footage of 24 linear feet, two feet wide?

You have to use 24 feet for two measurements and only 20 feet for the other two feet.

            So 24 x 2 = 48 square feet. Double that to = 96 square feet.

            Take 20 x 2 = 40 square feet. Doubled that to = 80 square feet.

            96 + 80 = 176 square feet lost.

I wonder if I did that correctly? Help !

What is the square footage of a 24 X 24 foot ring?

            24 X 24 = 576 square feet - 176 = 400 square feet of boxing room.

If this process is correct will a two foot wide apron on a smaller ring diminish its boxing area at an increasing rate? Or does the shrinkage in linear length, of the apron on a smaller ring, compensate and keep the amount lost consistent?

Anybody a math major? I'm not even sure if my first statement is correct, never mind the rest.

              - - No advanced math, just logic of question and answer.

Ring inside the ropes 24*24= 576 sq feet of fighting area, a good sized living room.

Ring apron an accessary for corner folk and a safety area if a fighter ends up out of the ring prob needs increasing to 4' wide.

No need for confusion and over calculation.

Everyone already understands this problem, they may not realize it. It is not a problem in quantum physics, boys. To get the area of the apron, simply subtract the fighting area from the total area of the platform.

26 ft platform with 2 ft apron. 26x26=676, 22x22=484. 676-484=192 sq ft apron.

Similarly, a 24 ft platform with a 2 ft apron leaves 20ft x 20 ft fighting area, from 576 to 400 sq ft.

                __________________________________________

Are aprons really 2 feet wide normally? It doesn't seem like that much from the television's point of view, does it?.

Years ago there were fighters that would ad ring sizes into a contract and the promoter has to deliver. I know that Ali did it in parts of his career. I would guess plenty of the lateral movement guys who carried that kind of clout also had stipulations about ring size.
If Pep was in a 24sq you'd never hit him!!!!!

My 13sq gym ring was double horse hair so that my boxers who were movers could really move in a competion ring, they were on skates!!

                    - - End of the day, Ring sizes, construction, ect, are like MLB Baseball Fields. They are all different, often widely different, sometimes even insanely like you...
