At this point I cannot consider Tyson much of a ring general. An underrated defense does not make one a ring general. Tall guys tied him up on the ropes time after time, frustrating him. He had no ability to turn a fight into a boxing match. People should face it that he fought successfully one way. If it worked it worked and if it didn't Mikey was lost. He was brilliant at his way of fighting but unable to adapt well. Usually, his punching took care of all problems. Ring generals figure out how to adapt. He bit Holy's ear off precisely because his boxing brain was not good enough to find a winning alternative, despite watching 22,000 boxing films.

Duran was so well rounded that he, in fact, could adapt beautifully. Hands of Stone had a wide spread of techniques available to him. He could see an opponent's flaws and go to work on them. Forced to do it, he could could box and chase you down for a points victory, as in Edwin Viruet. That said, I believe he was a good ring general, perhaps in the select group of generals.

Merely controlling fights does not make one a ring general either. Sometimes a fighter is able to control a fight simply by doing what he normally does best, and there is no need to step out of the box and do something different and display one's versatility. Most often, this was the case with Tyson. When the need for the big adaptation was there, he was not up to the task.

Let me reply for my foamy-mouthed critics before they get here.

Lefhook, you are an idiot with no concept of what boxing is about. Please find something else to do besides boxing writing, for you are not up to the task. I am tired of your know-it all posts constantly going against the established grain. That is my role. What are you, a ****** shock jock? I am a better shock jock. My boxing library is one of the best on the continent, so I should know. I am a champion, bred for it. What are you? I will meet you on either side of the Atlantic.

Ring generalship is different than ring IQ

Generalship is the ability to control how the fight is fought, pace, distance, etc---being able to get guys to fight your style of fight... Being able to consistently win rounds on points

IQ is having ring smarts to know your strengths/weaknesses and your opponents and knowing all the little tricks..

Old foreman had great ring IQ, but he was never able to be a great ring general..
Same thing for holyfield... He could be lured out of game plans and into wars pretty easily..

Ali was a genius in terms of ring IQ, but he wasn't a great ring general.. He was good but not great in ring generalship...

A guy like floyd or hopkins rarely if ever get caught up in wars, and always pretty much able to dictate the fight... These guys are great ring generals...

Currently floyd, ward, rigo, Wlad are the best ring generals

All-time I would say guys like pep, liocche, benitez, benny leonard are great ring generals

Ali was a tremendous general because he could adapt well.. Holmes and Foreman belong up there as does Sugar Ray Leonard.. Mike Tyson fought with almost the same style every fight because his height and reach didn't allow him many alternatives..

Some really insightful comments on ring generalship. I agree with these comments.

Yes, yes and yes. Think of Venn diagrams where two circles intersect, sharing a cerain amount of their areas. Ring I.Q. and ring generalship share a lot of area, but not all of it. Ray Leonard's ability to always size up where he was with the judges in a fight is an example of ring I.Q., not ring generalship.

Well we have different definitions of a ring general, certainly to me a guy who just comes forward with an unrivalled chin and engine (for instance your mentioned Armstrong) isn't the best example to me. Sometimes in the ring you have to fight and to be honest monzon didn't fight who Robinson fought, he fought worse opposition and if he would of fight some of the guys like lamotta and basillo (bare in mind robinsons age) he too would have been dragged into a fight
