Weaver was built like a black Hercules... Of course his shots would Hirt if landed flush, just ask Tate...

The dokes fight.. I didn't think it was a bad stoppage, ref could have let it gone on, but I got no problem with fighters safety first...

The real question is how you scored the rematch???

I always felt dokes did just enough to take the rematch

Michael Dokes was a talent. The second fight was close but I think dokes edged it.

I leaned towards Weaver in the rematch. But I was still mad about Joey Curtis's call in the first fight. I thought is was bad personally.

Dokes was the rising star and may have benifited from that politically in both fights

That all may be true... I will have to rewatch... just felt it wasn't a blatant robbery of a stoppage... Could have gone on, or weaver would have ended up like Mugabi did vs norris..

There seems like sometimes there is no happy medium when considering safety vs the importance of giving the champion a chance to get back into the fight. I was at the first ruddock tyson fight and there was both a riot in the ring and the stands due to the controversy of the stoppage.

I guess the second fight wasn't as much a robbery as it was controversial. Dokes was Don King's star and though Dokes could be stopped, Don King couldn't.
The first fight was bad enough it ruined the career of Referee Curtis.

Mike Weaver....late starter to the game, was in the army when some fellow called him out, whereupon the black hercules let fly an untrained shot which put the fellow down and out....Mike Weaver later was to find out he had Kayooed the heavyweight champion for the United States Army. A boxing career was born.
