Clay was winning the fight handly when cooper hit him with a tremendous left hook. It floored clay but I believe happened near the end of the round. Dundee bought clay some time by claiming his glove was ripped. Clay then recovered and tko'd cooper. This incident made sure an extra set of gloves were always at ringsideComment

Dundee pointed out a torn glove to the ref that delayed the start of the round by a few seconds and that was it. From 7:33 on in the video shows this.

Because Dundee didn't really cheat. The torn glove situaton has been highly embellished over the years. Some even believe Dundee ran to the dressing room for replacement gloves.

Definitely exaggerated over the years. And I don't know how a select few people can think Cooper would have stopped Clay without this tiny bit of extra time. Clay gets up steadily at the count of 3 and walks to his corner with no visible wobble. When the fighting resumes he starts an onslaught that right away destroys Cooper's face. Almost exactly 2 minutes after he got knocked down he already stopped Cooper easily. His recovery was far too good to be stopped by somebody like Cooper.
It must be because of the British commentator who keeps yelling "Clay doesn't know where he is! he still doesn't know where he is!" even when Clay is already communicating with his corner men with his eyes looking ok. He just looked irritated and a bit embarassed. But yeah I think the commentator is partly responsible for this myth.Comment
