  • The best defensive boxer ever?

Who in your opinion was/is the greatest defensive boxer? My grandfather used to say it was Willie Pep. Do you think Willie Pep was that good, better than Floyd?

Funny you should say Pep that is most everyone choice which is good because it shows how gullible most are on here being Wlad Klitchko style of defense is tailiored after Peps.yet he is the most critisized..... 'uppercut to entry into a guillotine, crank, and go behind or clinch ,he seemingly combined wrestling and boxing" as quoted by a very good boxing and martial arts analyst " Wilson Pitts on you tube as he is a REAL person with REAL videos and he is exactly on point....Wlad ,Pep and Prime Tyson are the best along with Mayweather and Toney.Dont be fooled by the certain no nothings on here, that will soon follow suit,im sure...

Tyson of the 80's was the best defensive fighter in history based on he fought on the inside and hardly clinched when being offensive,he was a true master of counterpunching making opponents miss and immediately bombing them in return. His opponets didn't even need to get hit, unable to hit Tyson usually took the fight out of them before it even started.

Except the saddler fights, pep didn't hold like wlad he spun and turned, also he used a lot of foot movement. Wlad uses his natural size and reach advantages - so I really don't see the comparisons. But agree with Tyson, Tysons head movement was unreal

In reply to the thread I think Whitaker had the best defence ever followed by Pep and Loche

Wlad is 6'6 240 plus he doesn't need to run or slip punches in a duck fashion. The rest of the basic style is true ,wrestling/punching....Pep was the master at it.Look at peps footage in most of his fights hit ,hit clinch, turns the opponent usually leaning or moving them at an angle of pushing them away with arm throws spinning them around or just as stated hit, hit grab and repeat.Whitaker was good too,.

That's exactly my point so that's why I don't see how u can compare. If instead wlad put his hands up and hid behind them tucking his chin and shoulders in and compared him to winky Wright then I agree, but willie pep a constant mover I don't. But like I said before I agree with the sneaky holding but pep held and turned wlad doesn't do that

The basic concept of peps style is the blue print for Wlads you are getting confused because the size differance and how Wlad unlike pep is the imposing figure ,he doesnt run around the ring but as stated the basic foundation is right there on film.Wlad turns all the time rewatch the Povetkin fight. The hit and grapple techniques and positioning is clearly there.
