  • So yeah....Louis versus Tunney?

Basically one way to handle this question is to ask: is Tunney in some way fundamentally better than Conn?

Another thing to consider is that because the Louis Conn fight ended the way it did it had the effect of adding intrigue, while answering questions and leaving the promise that things would always be interesting in a match up where Louis, methodical and without rushing, faced a fighter who could not simply evade and wait to become the proverbial active mouse in the snake cage, but a fighter who could give it back, stick, move and then some!

We know that Conn could have won if things had gone a little different. We know that Louis was ultimately succesful....if it took him a while, well thats why we need the championship rounds... I shudder to think how we would know about the superb patience of a fighter like Louis in the 12 round world of today.

Finally regarding Tunney. An exceptional fighter who might have just had the style to beat Louis.... So what think yew!!!!?

Tunney almost every time. Joe's feet were too slow to deal with what the fighting marine brought. He will never catch Gene by inching along the canvas. Plus, Gene surely hit harder than Conn and was easily as fast of foot if not hand.

I think prime Joe Louis would track him down and finish him off late. Tunney was a very sound technical boxer, had a nice jab and had very effective movement. but I don't think that would be enough to outbox Louis over 12/15 rounds.

It could maybe go like the first billy conn fight, with Tunney having a lot of success early on before Louis figures him out and eventually stops him.

Tunney has close to the perfect style to defeat Louis. On top of that he has all the goods of an ATG fighter so I could see him winning a UD.

After losing most of the rounds with movement and slick boxing Joe finds a opening like dempsy did in the second fight but finishes gene

That is hilarious. Louis did not figure Conn out or track him down.

I could see the same sceanario. Before George Foreman faced Michael Moorer, he said something like this: ”I got twelve rounds to hit Moorer with something big, and it will happen.”

I can imagine Louis also throwing that determining punch against a back-pedaling (and weary?) Tunney during a 15-rounder, and it had happened too.
Which had made me disappointed as I prefer technicians above brutal power (not that Louis wasn’t technical skilled), and would have been rooting for Tunney in this encounter.

I don't see Tunney putting himself in danger and getting overconfident against Louis, and he also has the conditioning to keep his great movement the full fight. If anything I would say Louis' best chance is to catch him early but I just don't see it happening.

If I’ve been counting right, so far there’s 3 votes for Tunney and 3 for Louis.

Let’s see what this thread heads to
