I seem to recall, (though I can't provide a source) that this was looked into a couple of decades ago. Floyd Patterson was judged to overall have the fastest hands of any heavyweight champion, but Ali's right cross was judged to be quicker than Patterson's. After that came Tyson and Holyfield who were judged to be comparable in hand speed.

I will say that Tyson's punches might have appeared quicker due to his reach being shorter.....less distance to travel.
Well you have to understand Tyson thru in limited combinations not an overload of ones...I gave statistics to back that up...and you have to take into account Tyson wore bigger gloves....some will argue that is irrelevant but that is a losing one,i myself have regulation 1960's one....from my uncle...I used to fight with them all the tiome as a kid in my backyard they are like fighting with no padding.Patterson was 180/190 pounds for the most part.....yes ali at 190 MAY be as quick but for a 3/5 punch combination?i don't think so.Speed and distance would favor ali anyway, its much easier throwing softer long range punches. At least I respect your analysis...not so much the other bias ones.

    • I know Mike was very fast but I give the edge to young ali. They utilized there speed in different styles and purposes. Mike cut off the ring and Ali danced around the center throwing rapid punches only to the head and being very accurate. Mike used his hand speed to both the body and head. Both men were impressive.

      • A good measuring stick for what Tyson Ali would have been like is Tyson Tillis.. James Tillis put on his best Ali impression and actually did very well..

Tyson was looking to go rounds,he toyed with tillis after knocking him down,he wouldnr do that with Ali....a reoporter questioned Tysons stamina prior to that fight so?you also cannot knockout everyone in 3 rounds and expect to grow as a fighter...tillis was also his sparring partner and later fought him again in an exhibiiton fight which Tyson clearly toyed with him again.

You can spin it any way you want to, but Tyson looked like crap in the Tillis fight.

I agree that he didn't look that good in the fight but that usually transpires when your opponent isn't cooperating with you.. The fight was competitive and this was a great experience for him..

What exactly am i spinning ?Where did i say he looked good? Not sure what thats even relevant here to since i already broke the surrounding details ???? If your challenging me on who had worse fights while a pre prison Tyson existed just say when? The fact he looked like crap and still won easily only supports how dangerous he was in only his second year as a pro .

                • Just out of interest - what's the proper intonation for a question followed by four question marks?

Do I end on a down syllable or an up syllable?

                  Just checking.
