Is it just me? or...some weeks people are ready to declare that that Larry was incredible, underestimated and better than Ali? then other weeks he becomes a ducker, a fighter of Irish brawlers and little else?

Holmes was always a polarizing figure. He fought very well behind his jab and took some great shots.

The thing with Holmes is that anyone could be competitive with him because he really wasn't a defensive genius, or had much defense at all.. Guys like him, evander, etc don't have the overwhelming power to finish fights early, nor do they have the defensive skills of WLAD or lennox to easily cruise to a wide decision...so they are stuck fighting a lot of hard rounds
You saw this with holyfield in the cooper, and dokes fights.. Less caliber fighters that were able to be super competitive with holyfield..
      Holmes is the same way

The truth is that the reasons that most of those fights weren't made probably had more to do with Don King.

That's what I was referring to earlier also.

I don't think Holmes was ducking anyone actively. He seemed to want the best challengers consistently.

It had more to do with people either not wanting to sign deals with Don King or just not dealing with him.

Remember, if Don King didn't have a 100% option on the heavyweight champion, the fight isn't happening.

Possibly, but Page had better boxing ability than Larry, and that sneaky, strong right. In shape, and on point, he's more of a danger of dethoring Larry than Pinklon and Tim, but the Tim of 1985, definitely beats Larry.I think the Pinklon of 1984 and 1985 wins a close decision over Larry, provided there are on off-ring distractions. He'd match Larry's jab, and score with those combos. He wouldn't really hurt Larry, but do enough to get that win.

page and pink would have had very good chances of beating larry. if carl the truth Williams can give larry problems with the jab,, page and espescially pinklon certainly could. the carl Williams and witherspoon fights could have went either way. as great as holmes career was he wasn't unbeatable by any means. he got some decisions that could have easily went the other way. page and pinklon when clean and in shape where right at Holmes's level

I always LOL at people that say Larry was better than Ali.

No, he fûcking wasn't. The only thing Holmes did better than Ali, was the right uppercut and he actually went to the body. I'll humor the idea that Holmes was a harder hitter, maybe he was. They were comparable in power, I'll say that much. Ali's KO against Bonavena proves to me that Ali could really crack when he sat down on his punches.

Ali outclasses Holmes in every other category. He was a greater athlete, he threw better combinations, he has greater hand speed, his jab is just as quick and more versatile, he moves a lot better and has better footwork, and I'd argue he had a better left hook

Just compare their fights against Shavers - Holmes was prime against Shavers, Ali was past prime and almost shot. Yet Holmes was the one on his a$$. It's obvious that Ali had more heart and he had greater durability.

Young, i am like you mate. Holmes was a very poor imitation of Muhammad Ali, when up on his toes i felt like laughing at Holmes. He was far better when fighting flat-footed. Ali's Jab was better in every way than what Holmes jab was, the only difference was Holmes threw his jab more than Ali did. Ali was faster than Holmes and an all round superior fighter and athlete than Holmes. Muhammad Ali also fought vastly superior opposition and took punches better than any Heavyweight who ever lived. Unlike Holmes, who hit the deck many times and was gifted so many decisions throughout his career. Yet Holmes was a very good fighter compared to the likes of the champions in the Heavyweight division over the last 20yrs.

                      As he should.

Holmes was a great HW in his own right, but better than Ali? HELL no.
