Nunn-Collins was first mention before Nunn-Toney

In 1991, I remember reading on a boxing magazine that Steve Collins was mentioned as Michael Nunn's next opponent but I guess the people around Nunn don't want another common McCallum opponent (Kalambay, Curry) that's why James Toney came to the picture.

I never heard of Toney then not until I found out Nunn lost his IBF title, had it been Steve Collins, Nunn would slap the hell out of Stevie's face.

As an avid tv watcher back then, I had seen Toney a few times. Most notably his victory over the undefeated Merqui Sosa(on ESPN I believe). Previous to Toney-Nunn, it seemed neither Toney nor Collins had shown they had what it would take to topple Nunn.

Nunn was considered the next big thing at the time. Toney was only known as a third of Jackie Kallen's Triple Threat along with Al Cole and Charles Murray. Murray being the highest regarded prospect among them by some distance.

In the end we all came to know who was the better boxer.

I dont think Collins would have any chance whatsoever against Nunn, but I must admit that I'm somewhat biased here. I was very high on Nunn and hoped and expected him to take over after Leonard as boxings poster boy.

I was also big in Nunn, still think he had the goods.

I was too, up until his bout with Barkley. That made me question my thoughts about it.

Still, I didn't expect what Toney did.

Collins would of KO'd Nunn IMO.

Stevie would have knocked Nunn out...Michael wouldn't be able to handle his pressure and strength.

Nunn was somewhat overshadowed by McCallum's exciting win over Watson in 1990, maybe the reason they wanted a more interesting opponent and Arum promises the winner of Toney-Sosa in March (that's a period of two months!) to get a title shot at Nunn.

Collins was never a threat in the early 90s, even losing to Sumbu Kalambay.

Collins was tough but I doubt he could have matched Toney's accomplishment.

Collins went on the year after Toney beat Nunn, to get outboxed by Kalambay and Reggie Johnson. Johnson like Nunn was a difficult southpaw.
