  • Boxers with no nicknames

As the title says. I can't even think of any at the moment.

Follow up question: around what era of the sport did nick names become popular and became part of it?

Lennox Lewis never really had a nickname. I can't remember one for Roy Jones either.

As to your second question, nicknames are as old as boxing as far as I know.

I don't remember Lennox being introduced as "The Lion" by the ring announcer. That would be my criteria.

Sonny Liston. His real name is Charles of course, but Sonny was given to him as a child if you count it.

          Julio Cesar Chavez
          Gene Tunney
their nicknames aren't commonly used at least

Chavez was always "el grande champion" or at least after the taylor fight.. All the fights in the 90s he was always introduced as the "el grand champion"

when choosing a nickname one should be aware of the tendency for names to become "dated." Today the "Terror Kowalski" may sound positively brutal but tomorrow? "The nonparal, the game chicken", the list goes on and on

Best to choose something with universal appeal.

I think that Tunney's nickname was "The Fighting Marine". But that was way before my time so I can't put it in any real context as to whether it was regularly used.

                    Harold Brazier
                    Tony Canzoneri
Ali for much of his career
                    D1ck Tiger
Marvelous Marvin Hagler became Hagler's legal name, so the
                    "Marvelous" technically wasn't a nickname
