Johnson was a very intelligent man, but he didn't develop that accent as a young Texas school boy in segregated Galveston, Texas. There are various audio recordings of him throughout his life. Ken Burns chose not to include any of those recordings because to do so might destroy the politically correct stance that Johnson is always carefully portrayed with. I suggest you study up. There is considerably more to Johnson than one audio recording taken of him as an old man before his death.
Oh, and Dempsey spoke in a normal tone, not like Tyson.

I can't recall who but I'm pretty sure it was an actor, anyway, someone claimed Marciano is actually deepening his voice quite a bit and only people who knew him ever heard his natural voice. I dunno how true it is, but, it's funny to think that's Rocco's deep voice.

Always love to see these super old posts brought back.
It has nothing to do with real life, but when I was a kid (about 20 years ago) there was a video game called "Greatest Heavyweights". At the end of each fight the winning fighter had a catch phrase they would deliver in a unique voice.
If I remember correctly, they gave Dempsey a very rough and gravelly voice while Marciano had a squeaky, higher pitched voice (think comedian Dom Irrera). Unfortunately, no Jack Johnson.
It may not be anything accurate, but those will always be their voices in my mind.
(Side note, please read this as tongue in cheek, which it is).
