  • Joe Frazier- what greats from other eras could he beat

I was messaged a question the other day about Frazier and asked how to rank him... My response was basically either h2h or resume, Frazier is top 15 lock and most likely top 10 for both... But it got me thinking.. How would Frazier due vs other greats from different eras... What other greats could he have beaten...

Interesting matchups vs Marciano, Louis, Lennox, Tyson, etc

How many do you think he could beat

I think Rocky would beat him in a war of a fight...I just think Rocky's chin and punching power would be enough to beat Joe.

I think Joe beats Lennox,Louis, and Tyson...I'm sure most will say Tyson beats Joe. It seems like Tyson always wins fantasy fight.

I think Joe vs. Dempsey is toss up...I really don't know who to pick.

I think Joe beats Wlad and Vitali.

Smokin Joe is one of my all time favorites. He gave everything he had in ever fight he was in. You had to literally kill him to keep him down. His will/desire to win was 2nd to none...I will say that his chin was not great though...I'm not saying it was bad,but it wasn't iron either.

      He'd massacre Dempsey. Maybe Holyfield?

I think the most epic fight to make is Frazier vs Holmes,, that would have been great.. I think Frazier could hunt him down and stop Larry late in a classic war of attrition

He beats Dempsey via quick stoppage

I think him and Tyson are about even.. I can see mike landing early and often and just bouncing on Frazier early and stopping him. But I can also see if Frazier could weather Tyson's early barrage, then Frazier would eat hi up and stop him late...

I think Marciano is best suited to beat Frazier.. The chin and power of rocky would put joe out IMO

Lennox probably catches him with a big fight changing punch after being out worked early, similar to the Bruno fight...

Holyfield would have to fight a perfect fight from the outside but I think he can win a decision over joe

Joe Louis would be a fascinating matchup.. Frazier would be barreling in on louis, and no doubt that Frazier had the power to hurt Louis, but could Frazier withstand Louis' counterpunches... I think it comes down to who lands the first big shot flush...

            Great assessment.

We know that agsinst big punchers who are sufficiently able Frazier is vulnerable. A Marciano fight would be incredible....thats up in the air....Who could know!! haha.

Lewis maybe, but would he be aggressive enough? Hard to call....

Louis is another tuff one! I think a lot of people who think Joe was a plodder never watched Louis in his early days....he had a lot faster feet than people think. I tend to think his fallback strategy was to stalk and catch but where I part company with many is my belief that Louis did have another gear. You have to watch his early fights to see it, before he was totally confidant in his punching.

Liston...No, Sonny beats Joe up like his protege Big George, but Patterson would be defeated by Frazier, I think.

I think Joe does beat Holly as said.

Seeing as how he has one of, if not the greatest Heavyweight performance ever in the FOTC, he has to be ranked quite high in H2H.

He gives young Ali and Holmes hell, could squeeze out a win in a trilogy. Tyson could blow him out early but if he weathers the storm, Tyson is in for the worst beating of his life.

Holyfield could outbox him but he'd be dragged into a slugfest, 50/50. This one and a Marciano fight would have been the most entertaining though I think the doctor would always end the fight due to Rocky's facial damage.

The ones I'm very certain would beat Frazier are of cource Foreman, maybe Lyle and also Liston. Out the boxers who would beat him the worst are Lennox lewis, he would outbox him from the outside, sneak in brutal uppercuts on the inside and tie him up.

Joe Frazier would stop Louis I believe, but it'd be a great fight and Louis could get revenge.

He'd also beat Charles and Moore, who would succumb to his size and power and explosive speed. I reckon he'd break Tyson's heart and stop him late. Holy might have the skills to squeak out a points win.

Dempsey would probably get hurt and dropped, Tunney might suffer the same fate. JJ might be too skilled down the stretch but I doubt he'd have tasted power like Fraziers.

                  H2H Frazier is just awesome.

Would Marciano catch him before Frazier does a number on him? Frazier would probably be quite considerably more powerful a puncher than anyone Marciano ever faced (unless I am forgetting someone). Marciano took a hell of a punch but could he take Frazier's? Skill wise Marciano must be the weakest of all the great post war heavyweight champions, his accuracy only seemed to surface late when his opponent had both tired and been worn down by all the thudding, but not overly accurate, punches from Rocky. I think i'd favour Frazier over Marciano, would love to have seen it!

I'd favour Frazier over all the heavyweights that came before him apart from perhaps Liston. Think he'd lose more times than not to Holmes, Tyson, Bowe, Lewis, Vitali, Wlad. Not sure about Holyfield.
