To refer to Tysons fight with Larry as exciting is a bit silly. Larry was far beyond his best and had no answer for a much younger and far more active opponent. In his day Larry could handle Tyson, I assure everyone Tyson doesn't bully Larry !!!! It's the same as Larry vs Ali, very sad match ups!

The Tillary incident I believe was during a Rid**** Bowe fight with Elijah. I remember seeing that on USA. What's this about Howard Cosell's sexual advances?

No doubt that Larry had seen better days, but in terms of atmosphere and a "big fight" feeling, this fight had it.. This was the first big name that Tyson met, and Larry had never been stopped and would be the only time in his career, if Larry could get mike into deep waters, it would get interesting.

And I can't compare it to Ali-Larry, since Ali was clearly done and Larry still had a lot in the tank since he would go on being a top contender for the next decade.

Sadly, the Larry Holmes of 1991/92 would have surely done much better against Tyson; his 1990s comeback was much more sensible. He had tune up bouts and was very active before facing Mercer.

In 1988 he didn't have long for a training camp and had no tune up bouts. He looked nowhere near as good as he had for Spinks 2.

As a regular Larry Holmes-follower during his early career until the mid 1980s, I'd say he reached his peak knocking out Gerry Cooney.

But his greatest moment, in my mind, was regaining his feet during the 2nd Earnie Shavers-fight.
I still believe, no other boxer in history would have managed to retrieve from such a devastating punch and become triumphant.

"The hardest one-punch blow ever landed that didn't lead to victory."
