As a matter of fact, if you go back past Figg boxing in Middle Earth was the province of elves....the best of which stood 5 foot 2 inches....at the heavyweight division no less!!

Sam Langford fought all the way from lightweight to heavyweight, and continued to fight - and win - even after becoming almost completely blind in one eye and partially blind in another. Problem was that he was just too good. That, and the fact that heavyweight career overlapped with that of Jack Johnson - who refused to give him a title shot.

There is NO case for Robinson avoiding Burley as a champion. None. He won the Welter title years after Burley moved to Middle and the Middle crown after Burley retired. This whole Burley got ducked by Ray thing wilts under the timeline and all we have are second hand comments. Sure, they could have had a non-title fight if the money was there but it wasn't. Ray went to Middle even at Welter often but he did it for money. How do you duck a guy when you don't have anything he would want? Their Welterweight overlap was relatively short. Burley's last fight within a pound of Welter was in early 42. Robinson turned pro at Lightweight in 1940 and was still cutting his teeth at Welter in early 42 against Zivic. He didn't even start the LaMotta rivalry until late that year and look where those fights were location wise. Those brought house. "He fought someone else while we were contending for titles in different divisions" isn't a duck.

Good observation: Burley was a leading contender to Armstrong and Zivic and then Zale (who was in the war for years so he gets somewhat a pass on a ducking charge). He was never a contender to Ray.

Talking about giant sacks. Joe Gans lost a a decision after 15 rounds to Langford. That in itself is perhaps not exceptional, but if one throws in that Gans beat the undefeated Dave Holly the day before and travelled 300 miles the next day to go the distance with Langford!

When I think of the word 'accomplished' I think of skills, experience, the use of a craft and my dear friend?????? NOBODY is a way more accomplished fighter than Burley. Langford may be better, have a better resume, be handsomer, uglier, thinner, fatter, have more hair, less hair, but Burley was one of the truly consumate fighters ever to step into a ring.

Your comment comes across as exxagerated at best, ridiculous at worse...zi like to give the enefit of the doubt so I will say you have exxagerated the accomplishments of any fighter compared to Burley
