They don't need to be unconscious and NOT hear TEN to be stopped.
A KO is always impressive but a tko works well too!
Lewis was rocked and soon to be hurt badly, I'm glad the OP of this thread doesn't ref. The ER in his ref area would be real busy with serious situations rolling in.

Also your doing a fighter a favor when he's tko'd instead of waiting for him to be counted out. The time span for inactivity on a tko is half of the inactivity suspension from a KO result!
    Ray.

If Lewis was allowed to continue, he would knock McCall out late in the fight, now my question, what will be the course in the heavyweight division if Lewis stayed undefeated, who will he fight next.

My belief is that there's no way Lewis will give 46-years old Larry Holmes a title shot, like McCall did, unlike Foreman, who has a puncher's chance against Michael Moorer. There were reports then of a Bowe-Lewis fight finally happening but I doubt it since Bowe's win over Larry Donald was just a confidence-booster, Big Daddy was never ready for Lewis, and the WBO champion at that time, Herbie Hide was as an attractive opponent for Bowe.

Most likely, Ray Mercer will get a title shot at Lewis next, and Holyfield will take on an easy opponent for a comeback fight.
lewis was on jelly legs and would have been starched had the ref let it continue. it was a good stoppage

HA HA HA ...this is a good one...Lewis didn't get screwed with Oliver Mccall,
he got nailed hard, then when he got up he wobbled when the ref asked if
he was ok...Look at it like this Lewis kinda got a gift with Ray Mercer.

All Lewis had to do was stand still for ten seconds and the referee would have let him continue. But Lewis couldn't. que sera sera

it was a good thing for him in the long run to have lost here and hired manny to work on his flaws.
Somehow I was smelling upset then when Lewis fought McCall, he doesn't have Emmanuel Stewart in his corner at that time, and he was lazy dropping his hands low, in his previous fight against light-hitter Phil Jackson, Lewis got nailed once and staggered to the ropes, the ending of course was really a surprise, Lewis being stopped in two rounds by McCall, I thought maybe it will last in later rounds.

No screw job: McCall knocked him loopy and that's all there is to it. And I say that as someone who was pulling for Lewis in that fight.

the ironic thing is it may have saved lennox's career. most fighters dont recover from brutal knockout losses and lewis would have sustained one had it continued. he needed the ropes to keep him from falling a second time and mcall was literally chomping at the bit to rip back into him

Lets also remember something: Mccall was, when he put his azz to the grindstone, a hell of a talent. No shame at all in losing to him actually...Lewis had a history of fighting real talent...Ray Mercer was a another guy like that. But Mccall on a good day? The sky was the limit, the guy could punch like a horse's kick and take a punch with the best of them!

                    1. Poster says Lewis would have ko'd McCall... I have to totally disagree, Oliver's chin is the GOAT. Dude has never even been down in his career, let alone knocked out,, Lewis bombed on him in the rematch and Oliver didn't even buckle

                    2. Can't believe Lewis was 29.. I remember this quite well, but never really realized he was so old,, always felt like he was 24,25 when this happened because it's usually portrayed as being in the early part of his career

3 stoppage was legit, he was up but staggering all over the place, and if u watch him, he buckles again after ref waves it off.. Other fights I have seen them let it go on, but this wasn't a bad stoppage or screw job,,, dude had no control of his legs

                    4. If don king did screw Lewis, than he has some serious pull to get a foreign country champ who is turning into a future cash cow, screwed over in his home turf to a virtual unknown
But isn't it the champion supposedly have the benefit of the doubt, Lewis was looking straight at the ref's eye and wanted to continue, there are boxers after going down hard and get up that were'nt answering back, Holyfield for one, when he got knock down against Bowe in the third fight, was allowed to continue, Holmes' fights with Shavers and Snipes were another example.

Interesting through if Lewis didn't lose there, how far can he go without Manny Steward training him, On McCall's chin, he may not get knockout but the Atomic Bull doesn't have the ability either to box a good boxer like Lewis for the remaining rounds.

if your an ll fan u should be kissing the refs butt. he prolonged lennox's career by letting him off the hook when he was about to get brutally knocked out. he had no legs under him
