It seemed as though many '90's fighters like Jones jr, DeLa Hoya, and Prince Naz had that going on other than Tyson.. Also, I thought Bowe's punches in the Gonzales and Holyfield III fights were pretty damn brutal..

Tyson's punches were fast and snappy that's why they made loud noises. But george foreman and earnie shavers hit hard with not too much snap or speed, which caused thudding noises that are very hard to hear.
Take shavers knockdown of holmes. It's obviously much harder than any single tyson punch, but all it did was make a thudding sound while Tyson's single left hook to Donnie long sounded like thunder. This does go on to show that louder punches just means more speed and snap went into a punch.

Watch/listen to Chavez's systematic beating of Dwight Pratchett. Every single punch Chavez made with his body and head makes a loud thudding noise. He threw every punch as short, tight and compact as possible.

I would guess nearly all the punches named are from relatively recent times. This is due to the fact that we live in a time of directional microphones, noise reduction and amplification brought to us by the television age. Boxing forty years ago did not have the technology that television has brought us. We would have to be ringside in a totally quiet arena to hear everything we now get to hear in our own living rooms. We are lucky if you ask me.
