Well, weren't there sometimes two champions, like when Ali came back from exile? I thought at that time Ali was WBC champ and Frazier WBA no?

During his absence Ali had relinquished his title claim, so when Frazier beat Ellis (the WBA champion) he was considered the undisputed champion. There was no guarantee that Ali would ever fight again. Of course many still considered Ali the true (and lineal) champion. Obviously when they fought that was settled.

So when they fought, didn't they both have a belt? And after that, didn't other divisions and other guys have more than one belt after that, after the early '70s?

I'm almost sure that Ali didn't come into the ring with a title belt. The splitting of the title between the WBC and the WBA started happening during the 70's. It escalated out of control after that.

Ah okay and agreed. Way out of control. Two champions was good enough, at the most.

I think, on paper it's Ali but not by much.

I could be wrong but did Ernie Terrell own a fragmented title in the 60's he had a defense against George Chavalo.

Yes. Ali was stripped of the WBA title when he gave Liston a rematch. Terrell beat Eddie Machen for the vacant title. Of course the title was unified when Ali beat Terrell.

Sugar Ray has a huge advantage because he dominated two division and both had great fighters to fight within them. Ali had a terrific era to compete in but fighting Frazier 3 times fails compared to Ray fighting the Bull 5 Times!
To fight for 25 years plus his amateur fights and accumulating over 325 fights and being stopped ONCE by attrition taking on and winning against a talented Light Heavyweight Champ speaks volumes for Robinson.
Most younger fans know the names that Ali fought because the history from Marciano up to the current era is spoken about more often and the Heavies are always more obviously known than other weight classes. They'll be names on Robinson's record that simply won't be known and that doesn't mean they weren't quality competitors it just means theres a lot of fans that don't know the era's prior to the 60's.
When Billy Graham was first mentioned here a few years most people thought it was the pro wrestler hahahaha.........
                    Here's the contenders and up & comers that Sugar met throughout his great career and if you don't know their names then your learning something now;

                    S. Angott (3 times)
                    M. Servo (twice)
                    F. Zivic (twice)
                    J. LaMotta (5 times)
                    H. Armstrong
                    A. Levine
                    T. Bell
                    Kid Gavilan (twice)
                    C. Fusari
                    J. Bosora
                    B. Olson (3 times)
                    B. Dykes
                    H. Mims
                    R. Turpin
                    J. Maxim
                    Tiger jones
                    R. Castelani
                    G. Fulmer (twice)
                    C. Bassilio (twice)
                    P. Pender (twice)
                    G. Fulmer (twice)
                    D. Moyer
                    R. Dupas
                    J. Guardello
                    S. Harrington (twice)
                    J. Archer

heres a few fellows that you should recognize and a few you may not but everyone here could compete highly in any era! Men like Bassilio and Gavilan and LaMotta with Angott and Armstrong would most likely be undefeated against todays young men.
Could you imagine Sergio looking across the ring at LaMotta? Seriously he would be crying honestly!

Ali fought terrific competition but he's have to fight each one atleast twice to compare to Sugarman.
Robinson had 1,400 rounds boxed!!!!! That's insane when you think about it!
Love Ali, I worked for him and saw him work out in person and was amazed how he fought> Sugar was the Greatest Ever and Ali idolized him. Ray.
