  • How good was Troy Dorsey?

I seem to remember him going the distance against several top boxers and giving them very tough fights. But I lost track of him after a while and looking over his record I see that he ended up with a shockingly bad ledger of 16-11-4.

Decent journeymen type talent but nothing great

At his best he was a true warrior. Non stop punching from the first round to the last. This style allowed him to compete with good fighters that had a much better skill set. He was 9-2-2 when he stopped the #1 contender Harold Rhodes and that got him a title shot against the colorful Jorge Paez while only having a record of 10-2-2. He held his own against Paez and I felt at the time he showed he was a worthy contender. His wars with Kevin Kelly and Manuel Medina were memorable battles. His style made up for limitations and allowed him to beat several contenders. However it was the kind style that does not translate to a lengthy career.

Dorsey was a high volume puncher with little power. That usually adds up to a brief prime. But he was a legitimate tough guy. One Dorsey fight that I can recommend is with Kevin Kelley. Very good action.

The man went to a plastic surgeon to have the sharp features of his face shaved down so he would not cut as easy.

That's a hardcore warrior right there.

P.S. hey Scott I was at the Tua vs Byrd fight also and won a lot of money on that fight. (I knew someone who was a sparring partner for Tua and he told me that Tua was taking Byrd lightly)

Did you get +300 on Byrd? Someone I knew there cleaned up with those odds. I was going to bet more, but got scared off a little when Tua weighed a very fit 233 for that fight. And he looked fierce at the weigh in too.

Yes and when they first put it on the board I forgot what the exact numbers were but it was crazy, like the odds makers forgot that Byrd won a Silver medal at the games. (to hell with the weight class the man won a SILVER medal for christ sakes)

EDIT: I liked Tua but I just could not see him out boxing Byrd, I always liked to watch Byrd coming up on Tuesday Night Fights.

I miss Byrd. A hell of a fighter. Another product of Michigan, where a lot of fighters were developed. That was quite a performance against Tua.
