  • Heavyweights and the scale

Why is there so much emphasis on size and weight for the heavyweight division? what we are seeing is big men in the past getting on mass building plans to fit into the heavyweight division, lose all of their mobility in the process as well as their stamina.

You can't take the scale digits from the past and compare them to today's numbers and say this determines size. Joe Louis and Ali for example grew up in an era without any mass building at all, good shape was actually determined by how light they came in on the scale.

A guy like Larry Holmes for example is around 6'4 205 lbs in his prime, he's sharp and fast with great stamina. as he got older he's looking over 300 lbs. His frame easily balooned up to this size once he started pigging out on a diet probably quite similar to Sam peters or James Toneys.

James Toney is another example, he's a former middleweight who ate his way to 240+ lbs.

does anyone ever consider frame size? bone structure? the internals of a person that allow them to fight at a heavier weight effectively? George Foreman was a big man, big frame, big skull, wrists, lungs and heart. He could fight at 220 or if he wanted he could be 300 lbs of muscle, slow as molasses.

Joe Louis as well could have been a very large heavy man.

The K bros are nothing more than tall slim men who lifted weights, they are the Chuck Wepners and Earnie Terrels. David Haye is Bob foster on steroids. The heavy weight division has not grown, the diets and caloric intakes have.

A lot of truth here.. Diet, fast foods and in some cases, steroids, play a big part in todays game.. Far from the 'real' sport it used to be.
