ever see the Holmes-Horace Robinson clip on youtube?

Holmes is beating the tar outta Robinson in the 4th round. Howard Cossell meanwhile is blabbering on about how Holmes has no power, will never develop any power and lacks the skillset to be a champion, pretty much saying he's not any good.

This was 1977, nice call Howard

yea,,,it was underststandable to a degree back when he was champion but he's got his due since retiring so he really should let it go. really pissed me off when I saw him at a roundtable discussion with bert sugar not too long before bert passed. holmes was badly irritated by sugar placing foreman as an atg partly based on his kayo of moorer at such an advanced age. he was totally giving foreman no credit for the win and talking of how George wouldn't have had a chance of beating him. he really made himself look like a jealous a$$ in that one. as much as Im not crazy about holmes to say the least he was a great tho and I would have slightly favored him over any version of big George. wish hed give the other greats more respect tho. would make him much more likeable

yea,,,it took a very long time for Cosell to see the special fighter in holmes ever since his amateur fight flop with bobick. he seemed to hold that against him for the longest time

I have Larry Holmes #3 all time. #4 would be another level lower

Hadn't watched this before. Pretty fun, as it seems Cosell doesn't see any future for Larry.
And a bit ironic, as it was Larry's superiority (against Tex Cobb) that had Cosell quit boxing a few years later.

I well remember how Holmes couldn't win with the public....He fights Ali and is then called a bully and was always compared to Ali. I always liked Holmes.
I did too. So damn talented, great jab. I only wish he coudl've beaten Spinks and broken Marciano's record because if he had, I don't think he would've stuck around as long and probably would've retired sooner, undefeated after a few more fights. It always seemed like he kept fighting to try and regain the title. And if he could throw a left hook, he might've if he could've taken advantage of that cut on Holyfield.

Speaking of Holmes, could we really count them as 20 title defenses? Shouldn't his number of defenses start when he became the lineal champion after beating Ali? That would give him 12 defenses, still pretty impressive to me.

Defenses of the lineal title defenses perhaps, but as far as title defenses go, no. However the Ring Magazine recognized him as champion two fights previous to the Ali fight, when Mike Weaver won the other title over John Tate. Their main reason was that Holmes had beat Weaver in a title bout and it also didn't hurt that on the night Weaver beat Tate, Holmes also stopped the last man to beat Weaver(Leroy Jones).

Was there a third champion back then?
