Gonzalez and Carbajal were much bigger names than Lopez at the time, and so that was the rivalry that really got pushed, with great results of course. Lopez just never reached that level of popularity, and that was maybe as much due to not having a great rival.

It was also largely the timing too. Carbajal and Gonzalez were hugely popular and very big names at the end of the 80s/start of the 90s and had ended their great careers when Lopez was still only a few years into his ten year championship reign. Lopez really wasn't a name fighter or even on the radar, apart from boxing insiders, until after those two had already retired which was a pity. Maybe if he'd been a bigger name, there would have been more pressure to move up and get those fights done.

It's unfortunate because it could have really added another chapter to that great story, a bit like if Chang had come along a little later too and fought when he was still in his prime. Would have undoubtedly been the greatest flyweight foursome ever. Never would have been matched if those guys had all fought.

Lopez just stayed at 105 for too long. It would have been great to see him move up and get into the action much earlier, but he was still in his the early stages of his first reign when they were at the height, then end, of their careers.

As for the fight, I think Lopez would take it reasonably clearly. I think a Gonzalez fight would have been much harder and I'm not too sure he could have won that one. Actually, I think Gonzalez has become by far the most underrated one. He's the best L. flyweight out of all of them and undoubtedly one of the best to ever fight around Flyweight. Better resume than all the others too. I find it interesting that Carbajal often gets mentioned above Gonzalez as Gonzalez clearly had the more successful career, with two wins, and better wins overall.

Carbajal wanted the fight. Don't know why it didn't happen.

I think he'd probably beat Lopez.

You really think Gonzalez is the best ever around flyweight??? Not trying to argue but curious on your logic and thoughts...
Can you give us a breakdown on gonzalez and his case for GOAT around flyweight, and names some of the guys that could be in the running.. It think its a pretty good topic and something that doesnt get much discussion around here very often.. You should maybe start a thread on it

Do you think Lopez is overrated abit in history since he had such an amazing record but kinda devoid of big fights....
I didnt pay much attention to him as much as i did Carbajal, so i really dont have an accurate view of his career...
What do you consider to be his biggest fights/best victories

I always feel he is kinda like a kosta tsyzu, where they had great skills but never tested it vs another top caliber talent,, they just reigned over C,B level fighters for a long period...

I thought Carbajal beat Gonzalez in all three.

Yes the first fight Carbajal got off the canvas to stop Gonzalez. The second two Gonzalez gave away the early rounds and came on in the second half and got both decisions. It seemed strange that a fighter can give away six rounds and get the decision in a twelve round bout. After the third and final bout in Mexico, when the decision was announced, the Mexican fans threw the seat covers into the ring in disgust even though their fighter got the decision.

Not at all. I think he's one of the best. Not the best.

Their first fight was an absolute classic....You've seen it right? If you haven't, get on it now. Just an epic war. Gonzalez was dominating, but then got overconfident and started making the same mistake, getting inside when he should have stayed outside.

The second two were harder to score. Gonzalez won the second fight reasonably clearly, though it was close.

They didn't throw stuff into the ring because of the decision in the third fight though. They were doing that before the decision was ever even announced. It had nothing to do with the decision. It was a very close fight that could have gone either way, but Gonzalez just pulled it out in the second half. It was very much a draw type fight and it didn't decide much. A bit like the first three fights of Pac/JMM (exchange the 4th for the first though).

However, they were throwing stuff because what had once been an epic rivalry turned really **** in the 3rd fight. Gonzalez was talking about retirement before and after and had started fighting safer, and it turned into a really crappy fight. When the bell rang and everyone was hanging around, the crowd got restless and started throwing stuff, then the decision got announced, and the crowd calmed down and were happy with the decision, despite the ****ty fight. They were pissed at the letdown of the fight and a very anticlimactic rubber match, and it had nothing to do with the decision.

Perhaps I am a biased about the third fight. I might concede this because it was one of those fights Carbajal was not supposed to win and Gonzalez stunk the place out. In the second fight I remember the fighters from the card themselves complaining about the decision. Especially Rafael Ruelas who won the IBF lightweight title earlier on the fight card.

I also concede that Gonzalez was an under rated boxer.
