  • Molinares Starling.. After the bell?

Back in July 1988 Columbian puncher, Tomas Molinares challenged Marlon Starling for the WBA welterweight title..

Starling, a master boxer, took the first 5 rounds, peppering the crude Columbian with jabs and combinations..
Round 6, Molinares still getting outboxed, until he pulls a massive right hand out of nowhere that catches Magic flush on the chin.. But it was right on the bell to end to end the round.. Or was it just after??..
Molinares was declared the winner, and on the night, the man in charge, Larry Hazzard, adjudged the punch to have been 'already in motion' when the bell sounded.. But the result was changed to no decision, shortly afterwards..

What became of Molinares?.. I heard he had some kind of mental breakdown, and quit

    totally forgot about this fight,,,,

I think it was just as the bell sounded and wasnt a dirty punch,, havent seen it in awhile, and not sure what ever happened to molinares,,

Starling was a great boxer,, had he been around today, he would be a huge success, i always felt he was in the shadow of curry, jackson, norris, mccallum

I think it's unquestionable it was after the bell and why it got reversed.

I remember that night well. It was a bizarre fight. Molinares turned around and got knocked out in his next fight and the WBA more or less handed the title back to Mark Breland.

The "after the bell knockout" Both fighters were in the act of punching so the ruling could have easily gone the other way. A instant rematch would have been fair but I think they were aiming towards a Honeyghan-Starling before it even happened.

Yes I heard Molinares went into depression. The WBA was going to let him keep the WBA title in spite of the commission's ruling if he was willing to fight Breland but he gave the title instead. I never seen him again after that.

For those that might remember the night, anyone remember Starling not remembering getting counted out or even being down? Or Honeyghan taking the opportunity to fight Starling right after that.(Honeyghan defended his WBC title on the undercard).

It wasn't dirty or intentional but it was after the bell.

                "I wasn't knocked out! I wasn't even knocked down!!"

"Do I look wobbly to you?"

I'm somewhat torn about this fight. Was the punch launched before the bell? I don't think that this shot was CLEARLY after the bell.

Clearly after the bell, I was sitting at ringside and everyone that was there knew it! Hazzard was a hazzard in the ring. More concrned on how he looked than what the hell was going on. I'm bias when it comes to Starling because I was involved with his career as a kid and pro. His trainer was a good friend and my lawyer at that time. Marlon got screwed in that fight and the Bumpus bout also. When coming up without big ties to a promoter or management company you will face adversity and you will get screwed at times. Hagler came up the same way and had to deal with the first Antuafermo fight as a draw. You have dues to pay without the big ties and thats how good fighters get stolen from their original training group. You have to have an in to get in and the in will keep you from getting screwed. In fact you just might get to be the screwer!
HA!! Late punch no doubt about it!
                  Bumpus was a bad call.
                  Hagler won the fight!

                  Ray.

Some good input so far, but it's right 'on' the bell
Nothing about it strikes me as 'obvious' or 'clear'..
Clearly and obviously, the ref, the judges and everyone at the WBA, were struck in the same way.. Only Larry Merchant, seemed positive (it was after)
Does anyone know, how long it took the wba to overturn the decision ?
